PESHAWAR:

The Planning Commission of Pakistan (PCP) has approved Rs605 million as the development budget for the University of Peshawar (UoP).

The budget was approved during a meeting between the Central Development Committee (CDC) of the Higher Education Commission with UoP Vice Chancellor Dr Azmat Hayat Khan at the PCP office in Islamabad on Friday.

Talking to The Express Tribune, UoP spokesperson Akhtar Amin said that the budget would be spent on various projects, including the establishment of a new academic block for the law faculty and up-gradation and expansion of the existing college.

In addition to that, funds will be used for the installation of solar-powered streetlights, renovation of hostels, strengthening of the Directorate of Works and environmental sciences departments, construction of central parking sheds, up-gradation of Bara Gali Campus 2 and repair and reconstruction of roads, walkways and telephone exchange.

Amin expressed hope that the renovation of hostels would help ease the problems of hostel users, while the construction of parking sheds would overcome traffic issues on campus.

Furthermore, the completion of projects would beautify the 61-year-old campus, he added.

He said that the funds would be released on a quarterly basis and the projects are expected to be completed within one year. During the meeting, Khan briefed participants on the projects and expressed gratitude to the PCP.

He assured the participants that efforts would be made to utilise the funds transparently. UoP Planning and Development Director Dr Badshah Munir Bukhari and representatives of PCP also attended the meeting.
