LAHORE:

Ejaz Art Gallery is hosting Hussein’s latest work till October 28. His collection is again a series of women, the difference between this collection and his previous work is that this time he has depicted his subjects in more casual settings.

“There is something about their expressions that draws you closer to the work and helps you connect with the subjects,” says Amtul Naqi, “He depicts stereotypes with a lot of depth and focuses on the story of his subjects.” The repercussions women face for not bringing in sufficient dowries is a theme that has long run in his work and also shows up here.

“He embodies his own reality and also that of Pakistan,” says David Harris, “the good and the bad, his work make you smile and cringe at the same time.” Cameron Munter, US Ambassador to Pakistan, has also taken a great liking to Hussein’s work and in his recent letter to the artist wrote, “We’ll always remember the splendid view of the Old City of Lahore whose spirit you’ve so memorably captured in your paintings.” Hussein told The Express Tribune, “I have depicted casual settings in this collection, it is a new dimension and angle for the work I have been doing.”
