LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) chief justice (CJ) on Tuesday directed the Establishment Division secretary to prepare a new summary regarding the promotion of Lahore Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Ahmad Raza Tahir and submit it to the prime minister for consideration.

The CJ issued this order while disposing of the petition of the CCPO challenging the delay in his promotion from grade 20 to 21. Tahir had filed the petition before his appointment as the CCPO and pleaded that despite being qualified the department had ignored him for promotion to grade 21. Tahir said the Central Selection Committee had also recommended his promotion but the Establishment Division secretary was delaying the promotion, taking unnecessary advantage of the suo motu notice taken by the LHC chief justice against his previous appointment as Lahore CCPO and a departmental inquiry that had been started on the court’s orders. Tahir had also filed a miscellaneous application saying the Central Selection Committee had ignored him and granted promotions to police officers junior to him. He said his case had been deferred on the plea that he was facing a departmental inquiry in the Gojra incident. He said despite the court’s order for expediting it the inquiry had not been completed. He said the Supreme Court had issued directions under which an officer could not be deprived of promotion on the basis of an inquiry pending against him. He prayed to the court to direct the government to promote him.
