KARACHI: ASI Boat Basin Imran Ahmed must be taken into the custody of the court for failing to submit a challan regarding an attempted murder case even though seven months have passed, judicial magistrate south Abu Alla Jatoi ordered on Tuesday.

According to the prosecution, the Boat Basin police had arrested three people, identified as Shireen, Shiekh Hamid and Mohammad Amir, on November 18, 2009, on charges of attempted murder and an encounter with the police, after which the accused had been sent to prison.

However, despite numerous notices issued by the court, ordering the police to submit a challan on December 1, 2009, officials from the Boat Basin police station failed to do the work.

Ahmed had earlier submitted a written request to the court in which he claimed that he was unable to submit the challan on time due to “inevitable circumstances” and asked for extra time.

The court, however, detained Ahmed at the court for several hours, after which Jatoi ordered Ahmed to be sent to prison. Ahmed was released on bail worth Rs10,000 after he submitted a written apology to the court.

The court directed Ahmed to submit the challan by July 15, failing which, he will have to pay an additional fine of Rs10,000.
