Qureshi and his backers torn between PML-N and PTI
A Pakistan Peoples Party stalwart Shah Mehmood Qureshi is in a fix over whether to join the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz or Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, sources told The Express Tribune.
The former foreign minister, who is a long-standing member of the PPP, fell out of favour with his party’s leadership in the aftermath of the Raymond Davis controversy, and has since courted other parties. Qureshi reportedly declared two days ago that he would quit the PPP.
Sources close to Qureshi say that around 20 PPP MNAs and 25 MPAs from South Punjab and interior Sindh have assured Qureshi they will follow him if he defects. Most favour the PML-N, though some are arguing in favour of PTI.
Qureshi accepts that the PML-N is a stronger party, but he is also believed to think that his group would be more dominant in the smaller PTI. However, if Qureshi joins the PTI rather than the PML-N, he is unlikely to receive significant support.
Sources in the PML-N said that a few weeks ago Qureshi met with PML-N President Nawaz Sharif, who informed him that his supporters would be warmly welcomed.
The two leaders recently held another backdoor meeting in Islamabad where it was decided that Qureshi would contact PPP dissident Dr Zulfiqar Mirza during his visit to interior Sindh in November.
The agenda of this possible meeting was not disclosed.
It is also believed that Qureshi’s negotiations with the PTI are ongoing, though Qureshi has informed PTI chief Imran Khan that his supporters have reservations over joining the party.
PTI’s Central Information Secretary Omar Sarfraz Cheema said that Qureshi was indeed in negotiations with the PTI, but that it was premature to elaborate. Asked about Khan’s recent statement that a large number of PPP members would soon join the PTI, he said that other political figures in addition to Qureshi were in touch with the party.
Qureshi himself told The Express Tribune that in his October 4 speech in the National Assembly he expressed his disappointment with the current regime. Qureshi’s frustration, it seems, is echoed by several PPP MPAs and MNAs.
Asking for their names not to be used, the members told The Express Tribune that the government had disappointed its voters, and that President Asif Zardari and Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani had ignored the party’s MPAs.
Qureshi admitted he was in touch with both Sharif and Khan, but said that he had not yet made up his mind about joining another party. He said that he has worked with Sharif as his finance minister, and he had no differences with PML-N MNA Javed Hashmi. He added that he had always had a good relationship with Khan.

To join PTI or not to Join PTI that is the question. however a seasoned politician like Shah Mehmood would think ten times before making a move in favor of PTI. the dilemma which Shah faces is the fact that whether he wants power or want to be a tool of change in this country. if Shah favors PML-N it will give another reason to the sharifs to mock Imran Khan. and if Shah joins PTI it will prove that Shah has actually transformed into a true peoples man.
the reluctance here is not about the seats or domination but it is actually the fact that does shah wants to join a party who will face the two biggest parties of Pakistan. if he joins PTI he should realize that he will have to let go of dirty politics. we all know what he did in the Raymond Davis case, we stand by him, we are proud, i hope his decision will make us proud once again. and let the Davis issue be the starting point of his steps in standing up for the rights of common people.
Imran Khan and Shah Mehmood Quershi will make a strong party. I hope Imran Khan is willing to do so for his party as well.

@MAD: Is it necessary to be a Gaddi Nasheen to become a member of PA or NA???? If this is a criteria then all leading politicians should be Gaddi Nasheen of some Pirs. It is time for all eligible voters to come out of these spells including baradri system. Our country is in a grip of our own doings which needs lot of care by all voters. I personally feel that there will be no elections in near future but Technocratic Government with a dummy PM or President.

Qureshi is fit in PML-N... TI is not fit for him. because TI is not in a position to contest and win a few seats. PTI has no vote in Sindh, Balochistan, South Punjab.... only has some votes in Upper Punjab. But in general elections when mainstream parties i.e. PML-N and PPP will in streets, peoples will support one of the two parties and PTI hardly can win one r two seats. I am of the view, both parties will try to defeat Imran Khan in his own constituency.

If this is the case, then zardari is the most experienced politicians, but i can bet that 0% of IK's followers will like zardari to join PTI (god forbid this ever happens). Please don't join PTI. Its million members have no votes. If there is a cricket match on election day, they will prefer watching match than helping their candidates. The reason for joining pml(n) or pti seems to be personal. e.g for pml(n) the group said they will get significant support so they should join pml(n). Similarly for pti the idea is that its a newer party so they will get significant role within the party. Non of the time Qureshi and his group said they will join xyz party because that party is good for the country. This thinking is very unfortunate.

It should be a no brainer. IK is the way to go. . . . But if IK, Mush and MQM consolidate, it would possibly have additional benefits due to their unique skills. . . . Any party that is patriotic, dignified, intelligent, honest and will not sell off Pakistan should be the one . . . .
What difference does it make? Not a fan of any politician, even an ex-PPP one, who has to choose between two party heads who are both Taliban sympathizers that are just eating away each others' voting base in Punjab.
I only give a slight tip to PTI, because PML-N is the older power and we're aware of their corruption and hypocrisy in power. Will be pessimistic on the fate of the country even with PTI whose leader's status quo, religious conservative and ethnic outlook with haphazard policy and pandering inspires little hope.

In my opinion PTI and PML (N) both the parties are best in present political environment. PML (N) which has track record of good development work with a vision and PTI with Clean and Competent leader Imran Khan. But in case of Shah Mehmood Qureshi, it would be better to join PML (N) as he has a good working relationship with PML (N) in past as well as PML (N) will get a good entree in their top brass leadership where Ahsan Iqbal, Ishaq Dar etc. At the other hand in PTI Imran Khan sb with an authoritarian style of leadership may not handle sshah sb in the system. As I remeber the days of world cup where -mran Khan used to have a dictorial style of captaincy. If PTI followers believe they will reject present style of policians then why are they demanding Shah sb in PTI. Isn't it dual face. So PTI followers should refrain from praying these leaders to join them but focus on promoting there existing leadership as we don't know any leader of PTI except Imran Khan. Therefore we should suggest that SMQ should opt party of cleans at least try once in his life that he has done something to cahnge the power politics in pakistan. After 60 years, pakistan is at rock bottom. And the credit of this situation is shared between PML(N), PPP, and the Miliatry. It is these who have ruled the nation all these years.
Now, if you want change, the change will only come with the YOUTH, with PTI. Old has shown its colors. We need to make space for the new.
Qureshi sb can be an asset for any party. But even he could not make a dent in PPP gov performance. Similarly Javed Hashmi has failed to make any dent in PML(N).
PTI is the hope of change. Something to look forward to. And can serve as a medium where good people can thrive, and serve the nation.
But regardless, PTI is about the youth, about change and hope. It is not about one person.

Joining PTI means loosing with big margin and becoming history. Nobody in Multan knows PTI and Imran's mission is to stop N league. Winning election is not his option. Imran never lets others to grow. He is a tree under which no other tree can grow, not even grass or bush. Joining PML(N) means Jail Yatra. Qureshi is not that stupid. Only option left is Mushraf's Muslim League.
Why abandon the PPP if he end up going to be with another status-quo party (PML-N)? Qureshi is a wise guy and If I have to bet I would put my money for him joining PTI - more attention, better chance to secure very senior role.

Im bemused that the guy who just quit the government because he wanted a certain ministry is now purged of all his sins and corruption in the eyes of PML-N and PTI supporters.
Be it Zulfikar Mirza or SMQ they were part and parcel of this government and those who are declaring them heroes prove only that they are only interested in power politics after all not public service.

SMQ should have quit PPP soon after he was disgracefully removed as Foreign Minister under US pressure. Strange, the government shamelessly claim they have independent foreign policy,they even do not have an independent Internal policy; their actions show volumes.America wants a weak Pakistan , a client state & that we have become.On the other hand whenever the govt: needs money they conveniently increase fuel, gas & electricity tariff ,hence general price hike of all commodities of daily use,making the life of public miserable by the day. The only country in the world having no fiscal policy & no budget.The so called rulers make budget every now & then......they are not even ashamed of it.If people of Pakistan have some semblance of respect left in them, they should vote PPP out.Now, Mr.SMQ ,being an intelligent politician,will definitely,under the circumstances, make a correct & sensible decision in selecting a party of choice.Good luck & Godspeed Shah Mehmood Qureshi.

My vote is for Musharraf. Let him land on 23 march, people will see the difference. He is fighting alone for pakistan, while the other politicians are fighting for themselves.

If PTI bets on SMQ and others from main-stream parties for its success, then what difference PTI would make? First you insist on having a different party, then strangely do anything to make your party look like others. In this case we are better off with seasoned parties like PML, PPP, ANP, MQM, etc.

Will PTI remain the same party if they're joined by around 25 turncoats from PPP and perhaps some fom PML ( noon, mirch, masala)? Surely, these runaways will demand concessions and most probably a big say in PTI's affairs. Careful, Imran Bhai! If they can leave their party after a whole political career, what won't they be prepared to do tomorrow? There is no use of joining a Tonga party. How corrupt PPP and PML N may be, but the change will and can only come through these parties.
If PTI brings a change it will be a miracle, and I doubt if any Pakistani gives such a spiritual status to "characterless", Imran Khan that no body needs any proof of.

Join Pml n. They are the only party at present able to take on the establishment. They have been principled and made some extraordinary strong statements and actions.

For 3 years PTI fan club heaped scorn on him for his ghairat less foreign policy and made fun of the picture where his head is in contact with Hillary’s. Now they want them in the party. Politically correct move, but it proves the hollowness of PTI’s revolutionary slogans.

If Mr Qureshi doesn't want change in Pakistan he should go with PML-N. If he doesn't want to outlaw corruption, go with PML-N. If he wants to rule rather than serve, go with PML-N. If he wants to rearrange deck chairs on the Titanic, go with PML-N. . . .
If he cares about ordinary Pakistanis - choose PTI. Justice, peace, integrity, rule of law, hard work and tolerance - sounds like an honourable venture for honourable people.
If 20 PPP MNAs indeed follow him to PML-N, Mian saab could potentially succeed in a No Confidence Vote

for the time being instead of joining PMLN, its better to make PPP(Qureshi). For the longer run parties like PMLN possess no future especially under the leadership of Nawaz Sharif

PTI would not give him any power right away, which he is addicted to. He would join PML-N who are going to reward him right away and he would not need to wait till next elections. Opprtunism at its height.
