Federal Law Minister Babar Awan on Monday accused the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) of deliberately issuing tickets to fake-degree holders in order to push for mid-term elections.

The minister claimed that snap polls are against the constitution and their supporters can safely be classified as individuals who want to damage the constitution and the 18th amendment. These plans, however, are bound to fail, he added.

While addressing the Gujranwala Bar Association, he vehemently declared that those who considered President Asif Zardari a political president are in actual fact the remnants of dictatorship. The minister informed the gathering that the Chairperson of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, would lead the next election campaign, and he has been nominated as the party’s candidate for the slot of prime minister.

While commenting on the PML-N leader, the minister said: “Nawaz Sharif should contest elections and become an MNA or MPA. This will strengthen democracy, and the PPP is willing to help by not fielding a candidate against him.”  He also said that the Punjab government should learn from its previous mistakes and should take everyone on board.

Commenting on the upcoming by-elections, Awan said that the PPP will abide by the charter of democracy, and will avoid repeating the ‘1990s politics’ while contesting in Gujranwala, Bahawalpur and Lodhran.

The law minister claimed that he, in accordance with the president and the prime minister, was making it possible for the current assemblies to complete their tenures.

Electioneering should be a regular practice in the country to flourish democracy. Let them face people wrath over 18th amendment bill if they consider it their prize. I'm sure PPP will lose its position in the next elections due to their failure in managing God given opportunity.
