KARACHI:

Appearing before the court at the eleventh hour and just avoiding wrath of the court, an Additional Secretary, Sindh Education and Literacy department submitted a letter before a division bench of High Court of Sindh on Saturday afternoon stating that a petitioner candidate was to be considered in place of another person nominated by the Sindh government for admission in a university.

The petition was thus disposed of as not pressed by the bench comprising Chief Justice Mushir Alam and Justice Syed Hasan Azhar Rizvi.

Sameena Rashid Laghari, who passed intermediate exam from Mari Gas Higher Secondary School, Daharki, Sukkur Board, moved the court against alleged mala fide act of the respondents including Sindh Secretary and Additional Secretary, Education and Literacy department, government of Sindh, for not considering her for admission to the Lahore Unviersity of Engineering and Technology (LEUT) against provincial quota on the recommendation of Sindh government.

Earlier the bench on Friday restrained the respondents from sending the result of a test conducted at DJ Science College for admission to Lahore University of Engineering and Technology in three disciplines and summoned Additional Secretary Education to appear before the court with all relevant record on Saturday, Oct 15. As no one appeared till 12 noon, Court contemplated issuance of warrants for non-appearance.

The two law officers of provincial government appeared perturbed but helpless when suddenly a woman officer from the department emerged and submitted the letter stating that instead of one Aqeel Ahmed, nominated by the Sindh government, petitioner (Sameena Rashid Laghari) would be considered for admission in the discipline of City Regional Planning.

As the petitioner’s counsel did not press the petition in view of the letter by the respondent department, the bench disposed of the petition.

The petitioner secured A grade and appeared in the admission test for a degree of Bachelor of Engineering with three options, BE PG, BE Geology, City Regional Planning. The petitioner maintained that although she cleared the test with good marks, the respondents are not considering her qualification and giving preference to other candidates having influence or who are rich.
