LAHORE:
A touching documentary about legendary singer Nazia Hassan and a play highlighting the water crisis stole the show on the second last day of the Rafi Peer Youth Festival at Gaddafi Stadium here on Friday.
Students from the National College of Arts paid a phenomenal tribute to Hassan through an enlightening documentary about her life and achievements. Though she died young, she touched many lives through her music and charity work.
The documentary included clips from various interviews she gave as well as comments from her peers.
The singer had a difficult life, including a rough marriage, but she maintained an incredible dignity and composure that shined through in the documentary.
There was many a tear in the eye as the audience left the hall. The University of Engineering Technology (UET) performed an excellent play called Aas, directed by Owais Khan, about a drought-hit village and a man’s struggle to prevent its abandonment.
The villagers are left ruing the greed and lack of vision of previous generations, as their unchecked use of resources had left a barren land.
The acting and plot of the play were of a very high standard.
David Kuijper, charge de affairs at the Netherlands embassy, said the play was so well done he was able to understand it even though it was in Urdu.
“The acting and storyline was so strong that even though I understand minimal Urdu, I was able to follow the plot perfectly,” he said. “It really takes a strong cast to make a play believable and enjoyable to every audience.”
The University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences performed Heer Da Qazi Nal Jherha, a spin-off of the classic love story Heer Ranjha. It outlined the struggle of lovers to sometimes gain acceptance from families and religious groups.
