A division bench of Lahore High Court on Thursday issued notice to the federal and Punjab governments on a petition challenging the entry test for medical colleges in the province.
The bench directed a deputy attorney general and the Punjab advocate general to file replies by October 20.
The petitioners argued that the admissions process was unfair and violated the principal of equal rights to all for access to education.
The petitioners’ counsel said that the new formula for calculating merit gave 50 per cent weight to the results of the entry test, a single two-and-a-half hour multiple choice test. This was unreasonable as the test had no subjective or practical elements. It also meant that the 12 years of education and exams the students went through prior to the entry test didn’t mean much.
