Relevant officials asked to provide details of investigation.

KARACHI: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has contacted the Essex Police, seeking details of the investigation that involved the country’s leg-spinner Danish Kaneria.

Kaneria, who was arrested along with Essex teammate Mervyn Westfield last year on charges of spot-fixing during a Pro40 one-day match against Durham in 2009, was given a clean sheet by the police. However, the PCB has been reluctant to include him in the squad, which led to Kaneria filing a petition in the Sindh High Court (SHC) against his continued omission.

The SHC, in the hearing last month, asked the board to contact the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) to obtain details of the investigation.

Following the instructions, PCB legal adviser Tafazzul Rizvi, who was in London to follow the spot-fixing hearing involving banned Pakistan cricketers, sought the relevant information from Essex Police officials.

“We contacted the CPS after the court orders,” Rizvi, who returned from England yesterday, told The Express Tribune. “The CPS then directed us to contact the Essex Police regarding the matter and we have now sought the details from them via email.”

Rizvi added that he did not personally interact with the relevant officials.

Kaneria last played for Pakistan during the England tour in 2010. The leg-spinner’s case, which was adjourned on September 26, has its next session on October 20.
