Karo Kari Dispute: Police arrest 14 men for holding jirga

Police claim that a jirga was held between two groups of the Malik community in Garhi Chakar village three days ago.

A case has been registered against 14 men for their alleged involvement in organising a jirga to resolve a karo kari or honour killing dispute.


The Mirpur Mathelo police claim that a jirga was held between two groups of the Malik community in Garhi Chakar village three days ago. According to reports, the jirga was led by Syed Fakharuddin Shah and it was decided that Bilal Malik would have to pay a fine of Rs110,000. He paid Rs50,000 immediately and said that the rest would be paid next month.

The police registered a case against the two groups and arrested Bilal, Asghar, Pehalwan, Altaf, Ali Akbar, Mohammad Azeem, Shafi Mohammad, Abdul Wahid, Dilawar and Syed Fakharuddin Shah. They are carrying out raids to arrest the rest.

Nearly six months ago, Asghar Malik who lived in Soomar Malik village, divorced his wife Qaima on the pretext of karo kari. He claimed that she was involved with another man from the community.
