Why bother with the idea of punishing Qadri when it is no longer in the realm of the possible. An olive branch that is offered to the Tehreek-i-Taliban (TTP) Pakistan and other killers can be extended to Qadri as well. Not to forget that the political leadership in the form of the recent All Parties Conference has surrendered to a peculiar agenda. So, forget about Jinnah’s August 11 speech now as the state has already transformed to a hybrid-theocracy. It has small liberal spaces, equally smaller spaces where Sharia is formally implemented, and larger spaces where the orthodox law is informally enforced. Try standing in front of a Jamaat-i-Islami/Jamaatud Dawa procession in support of Qadri to feel the melting away of the state and its changed character. Sadly, many of our post-modernists scholars will, yet again, call this as part of the secularising process through bringing religion into public sphere. Driven by personal ambitions to establish their scholarship, they won’t even question that the current discourse is not secularising as it condemns all other arguments as being against Islam. Are the protesters even willing to explore other religious arguments that may not save Qadri from the sentence given by the ATC judge?
There are no governments that are willing to stand up to the bullying and to establish the writ of the state. There is no intent to even deradicalise society because, in the words of a senior bureaucrat of the Punjab government, reputed to be close to the chief minister, there is no radicalisation in Punjab and even if there were, why should the state become an ideological warrior. Obviously, this CSS-qualified babu considered deradicalisation as anti-religion or against the tenets of Islam. This bureaucrat was a good example to debunk the argument that radicalisation results from lack of education. Here was a case of a literate man not willing to understand that deradicalisation is about creating sufficient space for all religions and sects to co-exist without fear of persecution, and increasing the state’s capacity to provide justice for all, irrespective of their cast, creed and religion. Thus, he presented the Punjab government’s development priorities as devoid of the goal of deradicalisation.
It was almost unbelievable to think that the bureaucrat’s plan had the sanction of his political bosses, especially someone like Mian Nawaz Sharif who made some bold pronouncements of building ties with regional neighbours and condemned parties with militant wings. Notwithstanding the goodness of Mian Sahib’s heart, one wonders how familiar is he with his own party’s support of militant outfits and if he considers this linkage equally condemnable? The fact of the matter is that no political party can claim to be above board as far as rising radicalism is concerned. The absence of the state in most provinces — Balochistan where people are being picked up and killed, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa where the provincial government has willingly opted to share space with certain types of militants, Sindh, which is devastated by floods and a government that is almost invisible and Punjab where the government opts to burn down state infrastructure — is visible. Therefore, it is not surprising to see militant outfits becoming the new arbiters even replacing the old feudal class. They have and will exercise greater influence on the electoral process, especially ensuring that no parliamentarian challenges the writ of these militant outfits.
The militants of today are the new feudal lords that will adjudicate and dispense justice not on the basis of any higher religious law but their personal bias for things which are superficially religious. These people, who hold jirgas and dispense justice, are not fully aware or trained to interpret religious text or other sources. Surely, memorising the Holy Book cannot be the sole criterion. For those who believe that voting another party into power will solve the problem of radicalism, they will be disappointed to know that religious radicalism is the only game in town. It is now time to think of ways to grapple with the new reality.

Actually our religion is under full control of mullahs. They stop us from getting a deep insite into the religion. Clergy itself isn't research oriented. They are habitual of seeing everything from one angle. Did anyone of us went into a library and found what is actually blasphemy? What is the blasphemy law of Pakistan? Salman Taseer was critical of the investigation process under the blasphemy law. Did anyone protested when Qadri kill him? We blame state. What did we do? Did we put pressure on the government to close Madrassahs or put a check on it? Why on earth we recognize their degrees? Their are so many questions. Solution is very simple but very difficult. Don't vote them. Don't study in their Madrassahs. Put pressure on the Government to bring a uniform education policy. Any aid to these parties from abroad must be sourced through government.
extremism is the serious threat to our society, whether it is the religious extremism or any other form of social extremism. seed of extremism was first sown by our British lords in the shape of Hindi-Urdu controversy, between Hindus and the Muslims. this process continued onwards during and after the partition. and the current sorry state is that our nation is proud to have this feature, deeming it righteous path of religion.
@DeliveryBoy: "Radicalization is not the problem. Unemployment is the problem."
There is far greater poverty in Bangladesh than in Pakistan. Yet no-one associates Bangladesh wih Islamic terror. Until you accept that radicalisation is the problem, you will not find the solutions.
I protest for not adding my comments
@ Shahid its gonna be shadi after talak.
i thank that death sentence of qadari is right to eliminate to the this kind of targete killing if we would not control to this kind of targete killing we could not get progress.
@csmann: First they came for the communists, and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew.
Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak out for me.
The solution for Pakistan is simple: All current politicians resign, then convene a conference of the religious parties to appoint a Caliph. Tear up the Constitution and replace it with the Quran. Remove all non-muslims (non-sunni) from positions in government and military. Ban education for girls, and require that women be accompanied by a male relative when in public as in Saudi Arabia. Ban music and television. Make beards and burqua's mandatory, as well as prayers. Have the army take back Jammu and Kashmir, and then Bangladesh. So very simple! Then there will be peace in Pakistan.
when good citizens don't unite and resist, rogue mullahs and foreign mercenries will do whatever they like
So much for Negativity. At least give some credit to the Judge for this bold decision. But No, that wont serve your agenda.
If the Govt. Politicians, and the security apparatus are incapable of carring out the verdict then maybe its not worth loosing more life for this man. The justice dept against difficult odds have done their job and if the others fail to inplement the verdict then he should walk a free man. Pakistan is well on its way to become a state where killing,Arson intolerance are the way of life, so be it. Sitting in the parliment and just looking pretty will not cut it and maybe "boots on the ground" in Pakistan dosent sound like such a bad idea afterall.
@Hasan: Who will fund the attempted conquest post 2014?
@shahid: You bet we wont
What a logic writer says forget Quaid's 11 Aug speech how can u do that. U free him and there would be 100 such people to repeat the act choice is limited go to stone age or establish the writ of state
@Cynical: Were are parents kids that they let the British manipulate them to this extent and the British left 64 yrs what has happened to our brains after they left. We are responsible for the mess we are in.
It's like the decay of the Roman Empire: as laws become unenforceable people look to a lord ("law-ward") or master for order and security, pledging their service in return, which accelerates the decay of centralized government.
For Pakistanis, it appears, the only such people available are the old feudal masters or the new militant religious ones.
It's not like the Army cares; the generals will profit as long as law is weak, and the jawans are just tools to be slain in phony or real battles at their whim.
If the law directs a life sentence then it should be a life sentence.
Justice Shah and his family, soon will be proud citizens of USA or Canada after seeking political asylum.Who knows? He might even become one of the many ex-pat pakistani politician!!
We, the people of this poor country have three scenarios's: (1) What do they say, its the darkest just before dawn! There is hope and things will turnaround. (2)Then there is the analogy of a patient with gangarene in his legs, to save his life amputation is the only choice. Painful but practical and we still have a country. (3) And finally, if a patient is infected with a deadly and contagious disease then there is no other option but to quarantine and then eliminate the disease so it does not infect others. We can become a North Korea and forget about everything. Clock is ticking and the world awaits eagerly as to how we choose to live.
Justice Shah and his family should immediately seek political asylum abroad. Just get out, Sir, NOW!
If scholars from all religious sects are on road against this, then where should we go? Change of religion???? We must listen and try to understand what others are saying rather than sitting in our AC rooms and commenting.
@zehra
Radicalization is a process that develops over time. With passing time it gathers pace. Religion had the definite role in the death of a million people at the time of partition. 1n 1949, the religious parties that had opposed Pakistan and hated Jinnah made a reentry into politics through Objectives Resolution. In 1953, over a 1000 people were killed in anti-ahmadiya riots. In 1971 war, religious militias were employed to kill Bengalis. In 1977, the Nizam e Mustafa movement with support of the army toppled Bhutto regime. Zia started a new era of vicious indoctrination. Thousands were killed in 1980-90s in sectarian killings. Tens of thousands of members of jihadi groups got killed in Afghanistan and Kashmir. Now every city is full of armed gangs of various sects terrorizing the people and fighting with each other.
Whether we accept it or not we are in fact now a closet theocracy heading for a complete theocracy.
Why not free all the murderes all the terorists all the thieves in fact all the criminals and put all the law abiding inocents in jails because that is the only place they might be safe.
I know we at rock bottom now. But this is not the time to give up, this is the time to raise our voices as loud as we can against these fanatics and their ideology of extremism . Take the example of Dr. Tahirul Qadri, who spoke so forcefully in favor of the verdict of ATC, understanding fully well that he is endangering his life. This type of courage we need right now.
Just run. If you can, leave this country as fast as you can as its the only way to save to save yourself
Afghanistan of the 90s is set to be repeated in Pakistan. Hopefully, the world will look the other way this time while we plan to conquer it.
Nothing can work when these so called democratic governments in Pakistan need the support of religious parties, to stay in power.
It's a catch 22 situation...somehow no Ataturk seems to be emerging in near future.
@LOK: the problem is exactly that. that they are 'silent' majority as opposed to vociferously vocal fanatics.
The pro-Qadri demonstrations are the manfestations of years of radicalization that have gone on in this country. The trend looks dangerous and mind boggles to think what the status of country will be in 10 years time. Imagine millions of radicalized rageboys, everyone believing himself to be the warrior fighting to restore Pure Islam.
The Government should act immediately now and start the de-radicalization process. As a starter, all those TV anchors spouting conspiracy-theories, should be arrested and thrown to jail. Government should take Madrassahs and appoint clerics who only talk about spiritual aspects of religion and will not talk about politics or about Amreeka. Clerics should be paid from Government salary and all Madrassah funds should be taken over by government.
The Government should also inform the public by campaigns that Islam and Modernity can coexist together. We should bring people from Malaysia and Indonesia to talk to our people. Give wide publicity to those people who talk about inclusiveness, not hate based religious discourses. This War Against Supremacist Mindset should start now or it will be too late.
Unless steps are taken towards de-radicalization IMMEDIATELY, this monster will grow only still more dangerously and will one day consume not just our country, but all those in the neighborhoods and beyond.
Radicalization is not the problem. Unemployment is the problem. Give jobs to the men who otherwise feel useless all day doing nothing and as a result see taking part in idiotic protests as reason to wake up everyday.Give them jobs and see these protests, and the control of the so called powerful mullahs crumble..
Pakistan is not the only Muslim country in the world there are at least 57 Muslim countries. The kind of bigotry, extremism, terrorism in the name of religion, that people of Pakistan are suffering since 1980, is unheard of in the rest of the Muslim world. How long are we going to let the terrorists make a mockery of our laws and Islam, which preaches peace, tolerance and human values? It is the paramount duty of the state to ensure that murderers are punished rather than turned into a hero. If the government fails to punish the assassin, then there will be no hope of putting an end to the spate of the murders and mayhems continuing in the country.
While we do that let's not forget to thank Ziaul Haq, and his cronies (Nawaz Sharif included) for bringing this menace to us...
The only solution in my opinion (which will never ever happen in Pakistan) is a COMPLETE overthrow of the old power structure - the trinity of - Army (who have the most firepower and actual coontrol), Feudal Pir Politicians (who control rural areas) and Islamic CLerics (who have controlled and created and shaped Pakistan's narrative and direction and laws since Pakistan's birth). Now who will overthrow this powerful troika which feeds off of each and gives legitimacy to each other. A grassroots left wing movement (Maoist) like in Nepal which is more concerned with bread-butter, education and health of aam-aadmi than be defender of Islam for Ummah. But like I said an internal movement will not happen because Pakistan has checks against any/all secular movement so much so that people are afriad to speak up. Waht is more likely to happen is radicalised youth from Pakistan will go to America or China and do some major Panga and there will be haevy external intervention just like US invaded Afghanistan after 9/11 World Trade Center Attack
Very sad and depressing but it is a true picture of my country and the mess she has been dragged into by the myopic leadership. As for MA Jinnah's vision of Pakistan it disappeared with him because of political Pygmies who followed him. Since no one is left with a moral courage to take the bull by the horns then might as well let Mumtaz Qadri be free.
Why not accept the fact that the idea of Dividing India was stupidity and work for reunification with India again. The only catch is that now India will not agree to that
In the face of such dark future as a well wisher i dont know how to express my feelings . I just hope there is a twist in the story and a last ball six will prevent the forthcoming chaos .
A country broken out of its greater part in the name of exclusive religiosity will ultimately break apart in the name of more religiosity. And Jinnah was the first to make this mistake. One wonder calling him a great 'muslim' leader for he single-handedly divided the biggest muslim country: India and turned Islam into an ideology of exclusion. What a service to Islam!
Punjab HC and SC of Pakistan have released every terroist that was brought before them. It is just a matter of time these populist Islamist judges release Qadri as well.
@ali
Wish there were more people like you who have the courage to stand upto the truth and look at it dispassionately. I would only add that the divisive society we witness today has it's origin in the Two nation theory. As Irfan Husain in his column 'Ideology an intolerance' (Dawn 7th Oct'2011) rightly says, "Clearly, it did not happen overnight. Looking back, we can see that the demand for separate electorates for Muslims in British India over 100 years ago was a major historical fork in the road. By conceding to this demand from a group of Muslim aristocrats as part of their divide-and-rule policy, the British tried to ensure that the two major religious communities would not unite against them."
Couldn't agree with you any more
We do have leadership, the problem is that we need to vote for that leadership. We do have intellectuals and competent, honest and patriotic bureaucrats as well. The babu under discussion may be a total nincompoop, and the author justifies it herself as she claims he is pretty close to the chief minister...bureaucrats who like to stay close to the elected representatives are mere bootlickers and yes men and most definitely not men of substance. I agree with the author where she says that there is no intent from the govt...and thats because their concern is only money...they dont give two hoots to the country's security or its economy. they're busy looting and plundering all they can!
Deradicalization is not possible at this late stage. No Government can bring peace in the country with the current Constitution. The Constitution took many years to be drawn up. The Constitution the country got did not contain the essence of what Jinnah had promised all the people. To make matters worse the amendments and acts subsequently passed mangled it completely. There were contradictions even in basic principles which could be argued effectively in court. So one could prove you broke the law, equally you could escape the clutches of law by citing some other provisions. The best way to get out of the mess is to throw a Constitution that has created terror and lawlessness into the dustbin. Take the best Constitutions of the World, study them and make a new Constitution taking the best of best. Leadership however good can do nothing when a country has a hotch potch mangled document passing as a Constitution. Dictatorship failed, Democracy failed, even Theocracy and Mullahcracy will fail.
Kill All Religious Extremists If You Have To Save Pakistan,
Land of pure finally getting pure.... true pure from ...
Stop spreading negativity, don't forget the silent majority who are not on the street because Qadri's case was straight forward and dealt with, silent majority who want Qadri to be dealt with just like any other murderer/criminal...
Why to free him? I dint expect such article from you Miss Ayesha. He is a KILLER and he must be hanged as soon as possible. BTW why has he appealed against the death sentence? You had to answer this too!
Great Analysis Ms Ayesha! Hats off to you. We need to think about something real. PTI and Imran Khan are propagating the policies of surrender to Taliban. I want to know is it justice? Those who themselves live the unislamic life want us to be condemned to Taliban and religious fanatics.
I think Ms Ayesha should also share the steps that should be taken for radicalization of Pakistan. This should be great help. I think these few steps are very important:
(1) We need a fundamental shift from the ideology that Pakistan is savior of Islamic world. We need to divorce the concept that Pakistan is a state of fundamentalist Islam. In fact, we should propagate that Pakistan was carved out of India because Hindu majority was about to trample the rights of Muslim minority. Pakistan was never deemed to be fundamentalist state until Zia came. so we just need to divorce the concepts that Zia indoctrinated into national curriculum. There is a need of revision of the curriculum and we need to delete the concepts propagating hatred and extremism.
(2) We should introduce Quaid-e-Azam’s concepts of the statehood. His first speech in the Pakistan Constituent Assembly is the core of the State Policy and blueprint of the future Constitution. Instead of edited Objective Resolution, we need to make Quaid’s first speech as permeable of the Constitution. We need to shift slowly towards Islamic Secularism from Islamic fundamentalism.
(3) We need to answer propaganda with propaganda. Taliban are winning because they are using the propaganda tool such as Islam and misinterpretation of texts invented by Zia ul Haq. We need to demonize Taliban and alienate ourselves from the draconian laws.
(4) Taliban regroup because we haven’t thwarted their monetary links. We need to become more self sufficient so that we don’t have to fear donor Arab countries if we find out their hand in Taliban funding to divert their extremists to our country.
(5) We need to give up the outdated policy of Strategic Depth in Afghanistan because the monsters that we bred at our own backyard are now devouring our country. We need to use the propaganda tools as used by rulers in medieval times such as declaring Taliban as Hurwi or Khuwarij.
(6) A clean sweep operation should be done not only in Army and ISI but also in the whole machinery of government and all Taliban supporters should be wiped off through covert intelligence operation.
(7) A quick justice system should be placed to address the real issues of the people.
(8) A national consensus should be built while keeping 1971 situation in mind and complete provincial autonomy should be given to provinces and all provincial natural resources should be handed over to provinces on American Model.
(9) Kashmir should be resolved with India while keeping the ground realities in mind. A free trade with all neighboring countries should be promoted so that the population currently deprived gets benefits and economic prosperity.
(10) Supporters of Taliban should be dealt like them.
If Pak had the equivalent of British-era kaala pani, Qadri could be sent there.
I beg to differ for the simple reason that killing a man in cold blood is one of the biggest punishable crime in both sharia as well as state law. How can you advocate in extremists favour? The courts are there for justice and it should prevail. In our society where all is already lost let's just not give up on one institution that is still somewhat functional ie the justice system. As for the judges' security, well we'll all die on our due time sooner or later. The judges might as well do some good and live up to the oath they took.
So please come up with a solution for that. You people are the intelligentsia of our society,we look towards you when we get irked by this fanaticism,so please do something..........
The noose that Pakistan intended to put around the necks of the not-pure-enough is getting tighter around the throats of the pure. The nation gone astray is gaining momentum day by day towards the cliff that drops into pure hell.
I tend to agree with the view of @ali. We do not have the quality of leadership required to take charge of this situation. The situation has taken charge of us as is evident from your example of the senior government babu with his head in the sand. This situation is full of contradictions and flaws and will implode leaving a mess - possibly some good may come out of this much later.
@ali
"Will reach" - you mean it has not yet reached yet?
I agree with everything you said. I used to think that lack of education is the reason for this radicalism but i saw well educated people having opinion that Qadri should be released and he is hero of Islam. Its hard to think what is the remedy if education isn't.
Agreed to the writer, every single word of her. A very sensitive issue and immensely vital dilemma of Pakistani society, beautifully explained by the writer. While 1950's when Pak was coming under the theocratic powers, a bureaucrat Mohd Ali Bogra, imported from USA, injected the germs of bureaucracy into the veins of this newly born society. The combination of radicalism and bureaucracy deteriorated all the laws, policies, plans, courts everything. State at this point, could not take a clear stance, whether establishment is supporting Shaheed Salman Taseer's killer or will he by punished under the laws of this country..!!..but..a country where her own Army and Other departments are filled with religious fanatics and theocratic ignorants, how would someone expect the Justice, to those who are the real owners of this country.
The process of radicalization initiated by communal politics of Muslims league will reach its logical conclusion i.e. a violent and reactionary society where extreme ideas predominate and various sects are at each other’s throat. A multi sectarian society that depends on religion for its identity is bound to get violent. Read the history of Islam from the War of Apostasy onwards. And i am a Pakistani.
