Marriages not just between cousins but double cousins are common and preferred in Pakistan and Muslim world. Is has done an irreparable harm to our society both mentally and physically. We do not have top class athletes like the marathon runners of Africa who barely get much to eat and run bare feet. How many top scientists have more than a billion Muslims producing? How many top athletes a billion plus Muslims are producing? We are going against scientific principles and these weddings must be banned the sooner the better.
Marraige between first cousins should be banned in Pakistan. Marraige between second cousins should also be banned if their parents were first cousins - I mean if they have any common great grandparent.
Besides all previous narrations, in Pakistan, the one of main reasons of cousin marriage is emotional blackmail from parents side without children's consent. it is happened particularly with girls.
@whoever clicked 'recommend' on my last comment, thank you but this particular comment was not supposed to be sarcastic :) @Leila Rage: yes, that is a well known fact but I was curious if there are any genuine studies comparing Muslims as a group with others.
@ let there be be: there have been actual studies which support the idea that congenital deformities are more likely in children born to close relatives.
@Eeman: Maybe you should check the Austro Hungarian Royal families first.
I have heard many times that incidence of babies with congenital deformities is higher among Muslims because of higher rate of consanguineous marriages. Does anyone know if this is just heresay or has there been any authentic studies?
So 40% are adamant that they want to be in-breads?
Not surprised. Cousin marriages are one of the vital reason of mental dysfunction and we've the highest number of retards in the world. Pakistan's performance testifies it...
At least they marry.
I find the concept of marrying your own cousins quite weird, especially since you grow up as brothers and sisters and suddenly switch to lovers! Gross! Our society is weird on so many levels.
The reason for the gross-factor is not irrational either, nature doesn't like when closely related individuals mate, the chances of passing on faulty genes is higher in close-consanguinity parents. I just wonder how much effect repeated cousin marriages through the generations has had on Pakistani people; it surely must have had a negative impact on intelligence on overall physical health of the population.
