Philips Electrical Industries of Pakistan Chairman Asad S Jafar said on Saturday the implementation of enterprise resource planning (ERP) was necessary to deal with competing demands for scarce resources within big organisations.
Addressing the Supply Chain and Logistics Pakistan (Scalp) Conference, 2011, Jafar said ERP, a management information system which facilitates the flow of integrated information among all business functions, produced tangible and qualitative results.
Speaking on the occasion, Byco Petroleum Vice President (Commercial) Wajahat Ather said a company must document all its operations and set a sound estimate of demand for ERP to improve the overall organisational efficiency. He said the integration of up-to-date data through ERP ensured the company would survive seasons of high and low sales.
Addressing the conference, SAP Pakistan Country Liaison Manager Hassan Jamal said the products of his company, which provides business management software solutions, were not as expensive as many people thought. “ERP is affordable. If you implement it wisely, you can recover the cost pretty soon.”
He said giving visibility to information helped improve the supply chain function of an organisation, adding that leading companies, including Nestle and National Foods, increased their fleet productivity substantially by adopting ERP.
Speaking on the occasion, Sproxil CEO Ashifi Gogo said sometimes technology was not the solution to a company’s poor financial state. “Processes should be in place first, especially in case of small- and medium-sized businesses. Technologies can later be used to improve those processes.”
He said his company provided a technology-based solution to the issue of fake pharmaceutical products by ensuring a secure post-manufacturing supply chain.
