Two women among 8 held from call centre

LAHORE:

The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) arrested eight suspects, including two women, during a raid on an allegedly illegal call centre in the Township area and seized 53 digital devices, officials said on Tuesday.

A team conducted the raid at a house after obtaining a search warrant from a court on the basis of a tip.

The officials stated, citing initial investigations, that the suspects allegedly posed as representatives of international telecommunications companies to defraud foreign citizens by offering discounts on mobile phone upgrades, SIM packages and other services.

The suspects allegedly used dial-up software to make calls to people abroad, obtain their financial information and extract money through fraudulent transactions and advance-fee schemes.

The seized equipment included 28 laptops, 10 desktop computers and 15 mobile phones. Investigators also recovered dial-up software and data relating to calls made to foreign citizens.

A case was registered and the investigation was under way.
