Matt Damon and David Letterman made unexpected appearances in the season four premiere of HBO’s The Gilded Age, although viewers could easily have missed their brief cameos.

The pair appear at approximately eight minutes and 33 seconds into the episode, crossing a street together without speaking.

Damon wears a top hat, an ascot, a long coat and distinctive sideburns with a moustache, while Letterman appears in a bowler hat and an all-black outfit, retaining his familiar beard.

Neither actor has any dialogue, and their appearance is limited to the short scene. Their presence is one of several surprises in the season premiere, which also introduces significant developments for the show's central characters.

Among the episode's major storylines is the wedding of Oscar van Rhijn (Blake Ritson) and Enid Turner (Kelley Curran). The pair enter a lavender marriage, which appears to be a mutually understood arrangement.

Enid later reveals to Agnes van Rhijn (Christine Baranski) that both she and Oscar entered the marriage fully aware of his sexuality. She also expresses her intention to support his interests in the arts and Agnes' charitable work.

Meanwhile, Marian (Louisa Jacobson) reunites with her former fiancé Larry Russell (Harry Richardson) at an after-hours gathering following the wedding.

After an incident forces them to take shelter at a hotel, the former couple spend the night together. Marian becomes concerned about the potential damage to her reputation the following morning.

Elsewhere, Peggy celebrates the publication of her book, while her future mother-in-law, Elizabeth Kirkland (Phylicia Rashad), appears to have plans involving her and her mother.

In another major development, Gladys (Taissa Farmiga) survives a life-threatening childbirth emergency, but undergoes a hysterectomy to save her life.

New episodes of The Gilded Age season four air on Sunday nights at 9pm ET/PT on HBO.
