“I haven’t read a review of anything aimed at me or my peers in almost 15 years,” he wrote. “But I do listen to the people. So this Halloween, let’s spare a thought for those sad lost souls who couldn’t achieve their dreams of becoming artists, and thus became critics.”
Waititi continued his criticism by referring to his 2019 film Jojo Rabbit, which also received negative reviews from some critics.
“The same people who also hated Jojo Rabbit. Irrelevant. Out of touch Obsolete. In the bin,” he added.
The comments come as Klara and the Sun faces challenges at the box office.
According to TheWrap, Sony Pictures is reportedly scaling back the film’s international release plans after it earned just $1.067 million domestically.
Based on Kazuo Ishiguro’s 2021 novel, the dystopian science-fiction drama follows Klara, an artificial robot companion played by Jenna Ortega.
Purchased to keep young Josie, portrayed by Mia Tharia, company, Klara develops a close bond with the girl as she tries to understand human emotions and the world around her.
Amy Adams plays Josie’s mother, while the supporting cast includes Aran Murphy, Steve Buscemi and Natasha Lyonne.
Despite the disappointing critical response and box-office performance, Waititi has publicly defended the film and challenged the relevance of its reviewers.
