Guy Ritchie’s $500m Sherlock Holmes hit breaks into Apple TV’s global top 10, 17 years after release
The show stars Robert Downey Jr. as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic crime-solver, with Jude Law playing Dr John Watson

Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes is enjoying a fresh wave of popularity, securing a place among the ten most-watched films on Apple TV worldwide.
Released in 2009, the detective adventure stars Robert Downey Jr. as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s legendary crime-solver, with Jude Law playing his trusted companion, Dr John Watson.
The film reimagines the classic literary character through Ritchie’s distinctive action-driven style, combining mystery, elaborate investigations and fast-paced sequences.
The film’s continued streaming success is particularly notable given its age.
It earned approximately $524 million worldwide against a reported production budget of $90 million, making it one of the biggest box-office performers of 2009.
Its commercial success also led to a sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, which maintained the franchise’s popularity.
Ritchie has recently enjoyed renewed attention across streaming platforms. The second season of The Gentlemen has helped keep the filmmaker in the spotlight, while MobLand has also attracted viewers with its latest episodes.
Both series have strengthened his presence in television, but the performance of Sherlock Holmes demonstrates that his earlier film work continues to find new audiences.
The director is also preparing another collaboration with Jason Statham. The pair are reuniting for Viva La Madness, an upcoming action thriller based on JJ Connolly’s 2011 novel and connected to the world of Layer Cake.
Its cast includes Vinnie Jones, Jason Isaacs and Ben Foster.
With Sherlock Holmes now ranking among Apple TV’s global top ten most-watched films, Ritchie’s influence on streaming remains strong across both new productions and established favourites.
