Rebecca Yarros’ bestselling fantasy novel Fourth Wing is officially heading to television, with Prime Video assembling its creative team and lead cast for the highly anticipated adaptation. The series will bring the first instalment of Yarros’ Empyrean book series to the screen, introducing audiences to a dangerous world of dragon riders, military training and romance.

The adaptation received an official series order in May 2026, following the initial development deal between Amazon MGM Studios and Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society in 2023. Yarros is attached as an executive producer, helping guide the adaptation of her popular fantasy franchise.

Fourth Wing follows Violet Sorrengail, a 20-year-old who is forced by her mother to enter Basgiath War College, where candidates undergo brutal training to become dragon riders. Despite her physical vulnerabilities and original plans for a quieter life surrounded by books, Violet must navigate a dangerous environment where failure can be fatal.

As she struggles to survive the college’s demanding training, Violet encounters Xaden Riorson, a powerful squad leader whose complicated history with her family adds another layer to their relationship. The story combines fantasy, high-stakes action and an enemies-to-lovers romance. The television adaptation is expected to follow the novel, although the production team has indicated that the series may include surprises for viewers familiar with the books.

Esther McGregor, daughter of actor Ewan McGregor and known for her role in We Were Liars, has been cast as Violet Sorrengail. Emilio Sakraya will portray Xaden Riorson opposite her. The casting marks a major step forward for the adaptation, which has attracted considerable attention from fans of Yarros’ books. Further casting details have yet to be announced.

Meredith Averill, known for The Haunting of Hill House and Locke & Key, serves as showrunner and executive producer. Lisa Joy, co-creator of Westworld, is set to direct the first episode and executive produce through Kilter Films alongside Jonathan Nolan and Athena Wickham.

Michael B. Jordan and Elizabeth Raposo will executive produce through Outlier Society, while Yarros, Liz Pelletier and Sherryl Clark are also among the executive producers.

Yarros has been involved in the adaptation’s development for several years. In January 2025, she revealed that she had read versions of the script and was pleased with how they captured the spirit of her novel. She has also shared the overarching story of her planned five-book series with the creative team to help maintain continuity across potential future seasons.

The Empyrean series is planned to span five books, with Fourth Wing, Iron Flame and Onyx Storm already published. The adaptation is being developed with the intention of bringing the wider story to television across multiple seasons. However, the scope and structure of future seasons have not been fully detailed, and the fifth book has yet to be released.

Prime Video has not announced a release date for Fourth Wing. The series remains in development, and further details about production and additional cast members are expected as the project progresses. When it premieres, the adaptation will stream on Prime Video.

With Yarros involved behind the scenes and a creative team experienced in fantasy and genre television, the series is among the upcoming adaptations attracting attention from romantasy readers.
