Mia Goth slams Instagram over fake AI selfie following Shia LaBeouf divorce filing
Meta said the account was removed for impersonating a public figure after complaints from Goth’s team

Mia Goth’s representatives have criticised Instagram after an AI altered image falsely presented as a selfie of the actress circulated online shortly after news emerged of her divorce filing from Shia LaBeouf.
The image appeared on an account using the name miagoth_ and showed a person resembling Goth wearing a shirt bearing the message “MY EX IS MY BIGGEST FAN”. The post attracted attention from social media users and several news outlets, which initially treated it as a genuine image of the actress.
However, Goth does not have any social media accounts, according to her spokesperson, Christine Tripicchio. Her team filed multiple complaints with Instagram over the account’s repeated publication of images described as counterfeit and manipulated.
In a statement reported by Variety on October 14, Tripicchio questioned how the account had obtained a blue verification badge despite posting content that could mislead users about Goth’s identity.
She said it was “incomprehensible” that Instagram appeared to prioritise the circulation of manipulated images over protecting the integrity of a public figure’s likeness.
A spokesperson for Meta, Instagram’s parent company, confirmed that the account had been removed for impersonating a public figure. The profile had been labelled as a fan account, but its verification badge and reported following of approximately one million users raised concerns about potential confusion.
The incident has renewed discussion about the risks posed by AI generated images and the challenges of distinguishing authentic celebrity posts from manipulated content. Meta permits certain AI generated depictions of real people under its policies, while using labels and other measures to identify some altered material.
Goth’s representatives have not indicated that the actress created or endorsed the image.
The controversy emerged after reports that Goth had filed for divorce from LaBeouf in Los Angeles on October 6, citing irreconcilable differences and listing July 28, 2025, as their separation date.
The couple, who share a daughter, have had a relationship marked by periods of separation and reconciliation.
