Freddie Jackson, the celebrated American R&B singer known for his romantic ballads and distinctive voice, has died aged 70.

Jackson died on Monday night, October 5, 2026, just days after his birthday.

Jackson’s family has not disclosed his cause of death. His loved ones said fans will have opportunities to pay tribute to the singer, with further details expected to be announced later.

Born Freddie Anthony Jackson on October 2, 1956, in Harlem, New York, Jackson began singing gospel music at White Rock Baptist Church.

He later joined the group Mystic Merlin before launching his solo career.

Jackson released his debut album, Rock Me Tonight, through Capitol Records in 1985.

The album established him as a major R&B performer, with “Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake)” reaching No. 1 on the R&B chart for six weeks. “You Are My Lady” became another defining recording.

His other recognised songs included “Tasty Love”, “Have You Ever Loved Somebody”, “Jam Tonight”, “Do Me Again”, “Nice ’N’ Slow” and “Love Me Down”.

Jackson also received two Grammy Award nominations in 1986.

He continued recording and performing for decades, with My First Love among his later projects, released in 2023.

Jackson’s net worth was not publicly disclosed. However, several celebrity finance websites estimated his fortune at approximately $3 million, based on earnings from music sales, performances, royalties and entertainment work.

Jackson leaves behind a substantial R&B catalogue that helped define romantic soul music during the 1980s and beyond.
