Aaron Sorkin takes sharp aim at Mark Zuckerberg

Aaron Sorkin's The Social Reckoning is drawing attention for its unflinching portrayal of Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and its examination of the Facebook Files, with the film receiving its world premiere in New York ahead of its October 9 release.

The Sony Pictures production focuses on Frances Haugen, the former Facebook employee whose 2021 disclosures exposed internal company research and intensified scrutiny of the social media giant. Mikey Madison plays Haugen, while Jeremy Strong portrays Zuckerberg.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Strong's performance presents Zuckerberg as a highly controlled and unsympathetic figure, marking a sharp departure from Jesse Eisenberg's more youthful interpretation of the Meta founder in The Social Network. The film depicts internal debates over platform policies, engagement and the consequences of decisions made by Facebook executives.

The project also drew attention through an unusual promotional campaign on Instagram. The advertisement states that Zuckerberg will love The Social Reckoning before adding a reference to Instagram's approach to advertising fact checking. The campaign deliberately connects the film's marketing with one of its central themes.

Sorkin's screenplay incorporates material from Haugen's Senate testimony, including concerns she raised about the company's handling of safety and its business priorities. The story also revisits reporting surrounding Facebook's algorithms and the way content that generates strong emotional reactions can spread across its platforms.

The film arrives at a time when Meta continues to face scrutiny over the effects of its services on young users. The company reached a settlement with US state attorneys general in a case concerning allegations related to children and its platforms.
