Makkah Pact in action
.

The Makkah Joint Defence Agreement marked a significant milestone as member states agreed to implement its collective defence commitments in full. As an immediate measure, Pakistan and Türkiye will rapidly deploy military forces and capabilities to Saudi Arabia to deter regional security threats against the Kingdom. While Islamabad already maintains a substantial, longstanding security presence in the Kingdom through a bilateral understanding, this trilateral escalation will significantly reinforce reconnaissance capabilities and aerial superiority.
The impression that Pakistani and Turkish troops will be engaged in hot pursuit against Yemen or any other neighbouring state is a misconception. That has been categorically clarified by either state. The deployment was prompted by escalating Houthi provocations, which Riyadh claims endangered the Kingdom's security through drone incursions near the holy cities of Makkah and Medina. Though the Yemeni militia had denied it, the belligerent acts from the pro-Iran non-state actor had led to truncation of supply lines, endangering Saudi navigation and global trade, alike.
It is highly promising that the Makkah Pact has transitioned into a formalised institutional mechanism by establishing a permanent secretariat in Riyadh. The recent meeting of the Strategic Political and Defence Committee with key stakeholders served as a timely demonstration that the alliance extends beyond mere rhetoric, signaling that member states possess both the political will and the strategic resources to act as a robust bulwark against terrorism.
As Yemeni government forces launch a counter-offensive against the Houthis to reclaim lost territory, the trilateral alliance's surveillance, intelligence-gathering and reconnaissance capabilities will provide a critical strategic boost. This synergy represents the core essence of pooling regional resources: to deter any major assault on the Kingdom and to prevent hostile actors from escalating the conflict beyond the brink. The articulation of Makkah Pact is a masterstroke of inward-looking military integration and collective capacity to confront and counter threats.
