Jagex announces RuneScape 4 MMO built in Unreal Engine
Jagex has announced RuneScape 4, a new massively multiplayer online game currently in early development under the working title RS4.
The announcement was made during RuneFest 2026, with the studio confirming that the project is being developed in Unreal Engine.
RuneScape 4 will be the first numbered follow-up in the series since RuneScape 3 launched in 2013. Jagex has not confirmed which version of Unreal Engine is being used or which platforms the new MMO will support.
A CGI teaser shown at RuneFest featured a town surrounded by a green valley, floating islands and a dragon rider being attacked by a three-headed dragon.
Jagex said the game is being developed by a dedicated team and remains “a few years away” from release.
The project reportedly began as an expansion for RuneScape: Dragonwilds, Jagex’s open-world survival game built with Unreal Engine 5. The expansion was initially planned for 2027 before the project developed into a standalone MMO.
According to the announcement, playtesters encouraged Jagex to explore a more traditional MMO experience based on the Dragonwilds setting.
RuneScape 4 will take place years after the events of Dragonwilds and will initially return players to the same region, Ashenfall.
Jagex confirmed that RuneScape 3, Old School RuneScape and RuneScape: Dragonwilds will continue operating alongside the new MMO.
The studio has not yet revealed details about RuneScape 4’s monetisation model or whether players will be able to transfer progress from RuneScape 3.
Jagex has also not provided a release date or shown gameplay footage beyond the CGI teaser.
