'Black Doves' return with new dangers
Netflix's darkly comic spy thriller 'Black Doves' is set to return for a second season on November 5, bringing back Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw as the unlikely pair at the centre of a dangerous web of espionage, betrayal and revenge.
The new season picks up after the events of the first, leaving Helen and Sam alive but compromised, with unfinished business threatening to pull them deeper into the shadowy world of the Black Doves. Helen continues to pass her nation's secrets to the covert organisation while navigating the increasingly complicated political life of her husband, Wallace, who is preparing to become prime minister.
The stakes rise further when Mrs Reed, Helen's enigmatic handler, becomes caught in a ruthless attempt to undermine her position within the Black Doves. Helen is once again reunited with her closest friend, Sam, a former high-end triggerman whose fortunes have fallen sharply and who now spends his days drinking in Soho bars and taking low-paying jobs.
Together, Helen and Sam set out to uncover the truth as loyalties become weapons and trust begins to fracture. Their investigation takes them back to people and conflicts from their pasts, forcing both to confront difficult decisions and painful sacrifices while trying to protect those they love.
Knightley returns as Helen, with Whishaw reprising his role as Sam. Sarah Lancashire is back as Mrs Reed, while Andrew Buchan returns as Wallace. Kathryn Hunter, Ella Lily Hyland, Gabrielle Creevy, Agnes O'Casey and Molly Chesworth also reprise their respective roles from the first season.
The returning cast will be joined by several new faces. Ambika Mod, known for 'One Day', plays Laila, an acerbic and anarchic Black Doves agent sent to assist Helen. Babou Ceesay plays Mr Conteh, a Black Doves executive whose motives appear questionable, while Sam Riley portrays Patrick, an emissary from a mysterious organisation who offers Sam a possible lifeline.
Neve Campbell joins the cast as Cecile Mason, alongside Sylvia Hoeks as Katia Chernov, Goran Kostic as Alexi Chernov and Samuel Barnett as Jerry.
Joe Barton returns as writer, creator and executive producer, with Julian Farino and Kieron Hawkes directing. Barton said he was excited to return to the world of the series and to bring together its returning cast with new performers.
The second season promises the same combination of espionage, dark humour and personal danger that defined its predecessor, with Helen and Sam drawn further into the organisation they serve and the consequences of their increasingly perilous choices.
'Black Doves' Season 2 will premiere on Netflix on November 5, while the first season remains available to stream on the platform.
