The Lunar Chronicles adaptation gets casting update from author Marissa Meyer

Marissa Meyer has shared an update on the animated adaptation of The Lunar Chronicles, revealing that casting for the film could begin soon.

The author discussed the project while speaking about her latest book, The House Saphir, and said most details about the upcoming movie remain undisclosed.

“It’s so exciting,” Meyer said. “They’ve got a lot of really, really great writers and a really fantastic director, and I know that we’re going to be looking into casting in the very near future. I cannot wait to hear how that goes.”

Meyer also said she is particularly interested in seeing how the series is adapted into animation.

The author has an anime background and noted that producer Christina Steinberg previously worked on the Spider-Verse films.

“And I know one of the producers on the project comes from the Spider-Verse movies, which, to me, are like top of the top when it comes to animated films,” Meyer said. “So I feel like I’m in really good hands.”

The author said she remains involved in the adaptation at a limited level, although the production team continues to seek her opinions.

“I would say I’m very much on the outskirts, but they also are kind of always seeking out my opinions for things,” Meyer said.

“So, I’ll be really curious as we get into the next phases to see that. I honestly don’t know, I guess, is going to be the answer. We’re waiting to find out.”

The Lunar Chronicles is being developed by Warner Bros. Pictures Animation and Locksmith Animation. Lindsey Ferrentino, Kalen Egan and Travis Sentell are writing the screenplay, while Noëlle Raffaele is directing.

The film currently has a November 3, 2028 release date. No voice cast has been announced yet.

Based on Meyer’s books Cinder, Scarlet, Cress and Winter, the story combines classic fairy tales with a dystopian setting featuring androids, cyborgs, a deadly plague and a Lunar kingdom.
