Michelle Yeoh's 'The Surgeon' sets 2027 release date after earning perfect Rotten Tomatoes score

'The Surgeon' is set to arrive in cinemas on April 2, 2027

Michelle Yeoh’s upcoming action thriller The Surgeon has officially secured a release date after earning a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes and receiving strong reviews following its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The film, which comes from Thunder Road, the studio behind the John Wick franchise, and Tango, blends medical drama with action and crime thriller elements. Yeoh stars as an expert surgeon who is abducted and forced to operate on a mysterious patient before using her decades of surgical experience and martial arts skills to fight back against her captors.

The Surgeon is directed by Roshan Sethi, an M.D. and radiation oncologist who is also known for the 2025 romantic comedy A Nice Indian Boy and for co-creating the Fox medical drama The Resident. The film also stars Martin Freeman, Laurie Davidson, Yuri Kolokolnikov and Joseph Mydell.

Yeoh has established herself as one of cinema’s most recognisable action stars through films including Police Story 3: Supercop, Wing Chun, Tomorrow Never Dies and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. She later won the Academy Award for Best Actress for Everything Everywhere All at Once.

In The Surgeon, Yeoh plays a doctor whose 35 years of surgical expertise become a weapon after she is forced to treat a mysterious patient while being held captive. The film follows her attempt to outwit her abductors and survive the ordeal.

The action thriller premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, where both critics and audiences praised the film, particularly Yeoh’s performance and Sethi’s direction. Sony Pictures subsequently acquired the film and has now set its theatrical release for April 2, 2027, through Columbia Pictures.

The film currently holds a perfect 100% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviews have described it as a genre-bending combination of medical drama, crime thriller, action film and midnight movie, with comparisons to The Pitt and John Wick.

Critics have also highlighted Yeoh’s action sequences, with reviews praising the veteran performer for taking on numerous opponents in the fast-paced thriller.

With its unusual combination of medical drama and martial arts action, The Surgeon is now set to arrive in cinemas on April 2, 2027.
