Kashmir Committee chairman, Pakistan envoy to US call for peaceful resolution of Kashmir dispute

Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Kashmir Rana Muhammad Qasim Noon and Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States Rizwan Saeed Sheikh called for a peaceful resolution of the Kashmir dispute, stressing that lasting peace and stability in South Asia depend on a settlement in accordance with relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

According to the statement issued by the Pakistan Embassy in the US, Noon and Ambassador Sheikh held an interactive session with journalists at the embassy, where the chairman briefed them on developments concerning the Kashmir dispute and the way forward.

Noon, who was visiting the US capital following engagements at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, stressed that “lasting peace in South Asia” depended on a just resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute.

He said the dispute should be resolved “in accordance with the prescribed solution enshrined in the relevant UN Security Council resolutions”.

Ambassador Sheikh, meanwhile, said the dispute “remained firmly entrenched in the UN and other international frameworks”. He stressed that a peaceful resolution was “indispensable to regional as well as global peace, security and stability in an increasingly interconnected world”.

On September 19, Kashmiris living in Europe staged a protest outside the United Nations Office in Geneva, urging the international community to address what they described as human rights violations in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir and calling for the implementation of pending UN resolutions on the dispute. The demonstration was organised by the International Kashmir Peace Forum and led by its chairman, Zahid Hashmi.
