Over 200 detained for 'online scam'

ISLAMABAD:

The NCCIA has raided three alleged illegal call centres in sectors E-11 and G-10 during the last 24 hours, taking 212 suspects into custody in connection with an alleged online fraud network.

An official said the raids were conducted as part of a major operation against illegal call centres involved in different forms of online fraud.

An NCCIA spokesperson said the agency recovered 306 mobile phones, 383 computers/CPUs, 299 monitors and laptops during the operations.

According to the spokesperson, the suspects allegedly used different methods to target people online, including Google-related fraud, loan and dating schemes, fake social media profiles and fraudulent trading offers.

The initial investigation also indicated alleged links of the network with India and Brazil, while Chinese nationals were among those taken into custody, the spokesperson said.
