Taylor Swift set for special MTV VMA honour recognising her music video directing

The new honour recognises artists whose work behind the camera has shaped music video storytelling

Taylor Swift is set to receive the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, recognising her work directing music videos throughout her career. CBS and MTV announced the new honour ahead of this year’s ceremony, which will take place on September 27 in Los Angeles.

The award has been created for artists who direct some or all of their own music videos. According to the announcement, it celebrates artists whose work behind the camera has expanded the possibilities of music videos, advanced visual storytelling and established a distinctive directorial voice.

Swift has increasingly taken control of the visual direction of her music in recent years. Her directing credits include "The Man", "Cardigan", "Willow", "All Too Well: The Short Film", "Anti Hero", "Bejeweled", "Fortnight", "I Can See You", "Karma" and "Lavender Haze". Her latest music video, "The Fate of Ophelia", is also among the nominated videos at this year’s ceremony, with Swift receiving nominations across several categories.

The 2026 VMAs will also mark another significant moment for Swift at the ceremony, as she is among the nominees for Video of the Year and Artist of the Year. MTV’s official voting site lists "The Fate of Ophelia" among the Video of the Year nominees, alongside videos from Ariana Grande, Bruno Mars, GENER8ION, Madonna and Sabrina Carpenter.

Swift previously used the VMAs as a major platform for an announcement in 2022, when she revealed the title and release details of her album Midnights during her acceptance speech. However, any suggestion that she could make another major announcement at the 2026 ceremony remains speculation and has not been confirmed by MTV or Swift.

The ceremony is scheduled to air live from Los Angeles on September 27 at 7:30pm ET and 4:30pm PT on CBS and MTV, with streaming available on Paramount+ in the United States. Snoop Dogg is set to host the event.

Swift’s new Artist Director honour adds another recognition to a year in which her work as a songwriter, performer and music video creator continues to feature prominently across the awards ceremony.
