Netflix’s Narnia reboot faces controversy over Greta Gerwig’s new vision

Netflix’s upcoming Narnia reboot has already sparked controversy following the release of the first full look at Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ fantasy world.

The film, Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, is Gerwig’s take on the story that explores the origins of Narnia. However, the newly revealed imagery has highlighted several creative changes that have prompted discussion among fans of the original books.

One of the biggest changes is the decision to move the story from the early 20th century setting of Lewis’ novel to 1950s Britain. Gerwig has also described the film as being influenced by the music and visual culture of later decades, including artists such as David Bowie and Paul McCartney.

Another major talking point is Meryl Streep’s casting as the voice of Aslan. Gerwig explained that she wanted an actor who could bring depth, authority, joy and emotional range to the iconic lion. Streep’s casting has nevertheless generated debate among some fans because Aslan has traditionally been portrayed as male in adaptations of Lewis’ work.

Gerwig has previously spoken about approaching the project with both excitement and apprehension because of her longstanding connection to Lewis’ books. She is writing and directing two Narnia films for Netflix.

The first film is set to receive an unusually extensive theatrical run for a Netflix production, opening in cinemas in February 2027 before arriving on Netflix in April. The release marks a significant theatrical push for the streaming service and gives audiences the chance to experience Gerwig’s reimagining of Narnia on the big screen.
