Two water projects to supply 63MGD to Faisalabad

Projects expected to provide clean drinking water to more than 1.3 million residents

Punjab Housing Secretary Noorul Amin Mengal on Thursday inspected two major water supply and wastewater treatment projects in Faisalabad and reviewed progress on their construction.

Mengal visited the Eastern Wastewater Treatment Plant, being constructed with Danish cooperation with a treatment capacity of 33 million gallons per day (MGD), and the Surface Water Treatment Plant Phase-II, being developed with French cooperation with a capacity of 30mgd.

The two projects have a combined capacity of 63MGD and are expected to benefit more than 1.3 million residents of Faisalabad, officials said.

Chinese experts working on the projects briefed the secretary on the progress of construction and various components, while WASA Faisalabad Managing Director Saqib Haral accompanied him during the inspection and briefed him on ongoing development activities.

Mengal directed the authorities concerned to complete the construction work within the stipulated deadlines and ensure strict adherence to quality standards.

Speaking on the occasion, he said the provision of clean drinking water to Faisalabad residents was among the Punjab government's priorities.

He said environment-friendly water supply projects were being pursued in line with the directions of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.

He said the two projects would significantly improve the availability of clean drinking water and strengthen Faisalabad's water supply infrastructure.

A spokesman for the Housing Department spokesperson said a 25-MGD Surface Water Treatment Plant is being constructed in Faisalabad, while the expansion of the Jhal Water Treatment Plant will add another 5MGD to the existing system.

The spokesperson said the projects would provide clean drinking water to residents of Ahmed Nagar, Rachna Town and Ilahiabad, while densely populated areas along Jaranwala Road and Satiana Road would also be connected to the water supply network.
