Cunningham criticised Sheeran after Macklemore was removed from remaining US tour dates

Irish actor Liam Cunningham has publicly criticised Ed Sheeran following the removal of Macklemore from the remaining US dates of Sheeran’s LOOP TOUR.

Cunningham, best known for playing Davos Seaworth in Game of Thrones, addressed the controversy in posts shared on X on September 15. In one post, he wrote, "We know who Ed Sheeran is now." He followed that with another message challenging the idea of remaining neutral during the war in Gaza.

"If you find yourself saying 'I'm not taking sides' during a genocide, you are. You most definitely are," Cunningham wrote. The second post did not name Sheeran directly, but it came amid growing criticism surrounding the singer and Macklemore’s removal from the tour.

The dispute centres on Macklemore’s performances at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on September 4 and 5. During his opening sets, the rapper spoke in support of Palestinians and repeatedly used the phrase "Free Palestine". He also performed his protest song "Hind’s Hall" and discussed the situation in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.

Macklemore was subsequently removed from the remaining US dates. Messina Touring Group, the promoter for Sheeran’s US tour, said venues had informed organisers that they would not allow concerts to proceed with Macklemore on the lineup. The promoter said keeping him would have risked cancellations affecting hundreds of thousands of ticket holders.

Macklemore later said Sheeran told him the words "Free Palestine" and the Palestinian flag had been hurtful to people he had spoken with. He also claimed Sheeran could not move beyond his public position of not taking sides. Those comments came from Macklemore’s account of their conversations, rather than from a public statement by Sheeran himself.

Cunningham has previously spoken publicly about his support for Palestinians, making his latest comments consistent with his established position. His posts have now added another prominent entertainment figure to the debate surrounding Macklemore’s removal and Sheeran’s response.
