Ed Sheeran says Macklemore’s removal from his Loop Tour was the promoter’s decision after pro-Palestinian remarks

Ed Sheeran has addressed Macklemore’s removal from the remaining dates of his US Loop Tour, saying the decision was made by the tour promoter and was not his choice.

In a statement, Sheeran said he was “appalled” by the conflict between Israel and Palestine and described the suffering on both sides as a human tragedy. He explained that venues on upcoming tour dates had indicated they would cancel the shows if Macklemore remained on the lineup.

Sheeran said he had spoken with venues, including Robert Kraft, as well as promoters and activists from both sides in an effort to find a resolution. However, he said the venues and promoter ultimately made the final decision.

“Macklemore coming off tour was the promoter’s decision, it was not mine,” Sheeran said, noting that Macklemore’s contract was with the promoter rather than him.

Macklemore was removed from the Loop Tour after making pro-Palestinian comments during his Sept. 4 and 5 performances at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. During his set, the rapper called for a “Free Palestine” and performed his song "Hind’s Hall" while images depicting destruction in Gaza appeared on screens.

The performances prompted criticism and a petition from the Israeli American Council calling for Macklemore to be removed from the tour. The rapper later said Sheeran told him Kraft had pressured stadium owners over his continued participation.

Sheeran also explained why he has avoided making political statements through his professional platform. He said his concerts attract people of different backgrounds, including young audiences, and that he wants his shows to remain spaces focused on unity and safety.

The Loop Tour is scheduled to resume Sept. 19 in Philadelphia, with Macklemore no longer part of the remaining support lineup.
