Elon Musk has criticised Alex Gibney’s 'Musk' documentary and reportedly threatened legal action over film claims

Elon Musk has criticised filmmaker Alex Gibney following premiere of the documentary Musk at the Venice Film Festival, accusing him of making a “hit piece” about him, also reportedly threatening legal action over claims made in the film.

Musk made a series of posts on X targeting Gibney, describing the Oscar-winning director as having “zero integrity” and a “bitter old man who lost the plot long ago.”

He also called the four-hour documentary “boring af [as f***]” and alleged that the film was a “psy op”.

Musk shared an image that appeared to depict Gibney as being controlled by Democrats and George Soros, as well as another image showing a realistic poop emoji on the filmmaker’s head. “It's an improvement,” Musk wrote.

Musk also disputed claims involving conservative influencer Ashley St. Clair, who had a son with him in 2024.

He denied that St. Clair was offered a $40 million financial settlement following their split in exchange for signing a non-disclosure agreement.

“She was never offered that and has a history of making false claims,” Musk wrote.

Musk has also reportedly threatened to sue Jigsaw Productions, the company behind the documentary, over its suggestion that he used Starlink satellites to influence the 2024 US presidential election in favour of Donald Trump.

According to a legal letter from Musk’s attorney Alex Spiro, cited by the New York Post, the claim is false.

“You are … on notice, before release, that the insinuation is false, that the material refuting it is public, and that you chose not to be told the rest,” Spiro reportedly wrote.

At a Venice Film Festival press conference, Gibney said he encountered a “tremendous sense of fear” while seeking interviewees for the documentary.

“What I discovered was that the story of Musk was not, in a way, a new tech story. Though there's much about it that is tech, but… his story is really the story of an old wine in a new bottle,” Gibney said.
