Neon has released the trailer for Luca Guadagnino’s Artificial, with Andrew Garfield starring as OpenAI founder Sam Altman. The film will open in cinemas on Christmas Day.

Artificial centres on the controversy surrounding Altman’s sudden removal from OpenAI in 2023 and his return to the company just five days later. The film also follows the pressure surrounding the artificial intelligence arms race.

Garfield plays Altman, while Ike Barinholtz portrays OpenAI co-founder Elon Musk. Monica Barbaro stars as former OpenAI chief technology officer Mira Murati, while Yura Borisov plays former OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever. Mark Rylance portrays Nobel Prize winner Geoffrey Hinton.

Jason Schwartzman, Zosia Mamet, Cooper Hoffman, Chris O’Dowd, Cooper Koch and Billie Lourd also feature in the cast.

Guadagnino directed Artificial from a screenplay by SNL alum Simon Rich. Guadagnino, David Heyman, Jeffrey Clifford and Jennifer Fox produced the film.

Artificial was originally set for worldwide distribution through Amazon MGM, but the studio dropped the project earlier this year after signing a major partnership with OpenAI and investing $50 billion in the company. Amazon MGM said the film would “be better served if it were released by a different studio.”

Netflix, A24 and Focus subsequently passed on the project before Neon agreed to distribute Artificial in June 2026.

Artificial will arrive in cinemas on December 25.
