KARACHI: The debut video by the eclectic band Taal Karisma released this week.

The video, which was screened for a select audience last weekend at Karachi’s Pak American Cultural Centre, has been directed and produced by Nefer Sehgal and Mansoor Mujahid respectively of NM Productions. Following the screening, the band also performed a short set, a groovy selection of the band’s songs that showcased their impressive command over vocals and instruments such as the tabla.

Taal Karisma, which comprises of graduates of the National Academy of Performing Arts, has developed a cult following in Karachi over the past year.

Ahsan Bari, the lead guitarist and vocalist of the band told The Express Tribune, “’Joy of Sorrow’ is our first video, and even though the song is in Urdu, the title is in English. The song is basically a fusion of percussion.” Taal Karisma comprises of Ahsan Bari on vocals, guitars and composition; Alan Simon on percussion, tabla and composition whereas Joshua Fernandes is on drums and percussion and Zeeshan Pervaiz on bass.

According to Bari, “The theme of the song is based on the artists’ community. It’s focused on how no concerts are happening in the city. Apart from the few international artists who are not suffering, the entire lot of musicians is not an economically stable position.”

The theme of the dark and foreboding video, according to Bari, is how the artists’ community is suppressed in Pakistan. “We really liked the concept put forward by NM Productions and this shows how the artists’ community is suppressed in the political scene of the country,” adds Bari.

Zeeshan Pervaiz said about his experience, “We were all very excited about it. It was a good and interesting collaboration. The theme of ‘Joy of Sorrow’ is basically very artistic.”
