Christopher Nolan’s 'The Odyssey' crosses $1 billion internationally, first non-sequel since 'Avatar' to hit $1B

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has crossed a major box office milestone, earning more than $1 billion at the international box office.

The Universal Pictures epic has collected $1.014 billion from overseas markets, making it the 17th film to pass the $1 billion mark internationally. The achievement is particularly notable because The Odyssey is the first Hollywood film that is neither a sequel nor a remake to reach the milestone since James Cameron’s Avatar in 2009.

Starring Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Tom Holland and Jon Bernthal, The Odyssey has become Nolan’s highest-grossing film worldwide, with a global total of $1.59 billion.

The film has performed strongly across several international markets. Its biggest overseas territories include the UK and Ireland with $109.2 million, China with $92.7 million, France with $84.6 million, South Korea with $74 million and Italy with $63.2 million.

Germany, Australia, Spain, Mexico and India have also contributed significantly to the film’s international box office total.

The Odyssey opened with $264.1 million globally, marking the biggest opening of Nolan’s career. Its international debut brought in $139.6 million, also setting a new overseas opening record for the director.

The film has additionally become the highest-grossing movie ever released in IMAX, earning more than $457 million worldwide in the large-format presentation. IMAX has extended the film’s run in 70mm IMAX cinemas through the end of September.

The latest milestone further strengthens The Odyssey as one of 2026’s biggest box office successes and adds another major achievement to Nolan’s career.
