Michael Keaton and Morgan Freeman reunite for Western thriller 'Rode to Ruin'

Michael Keaton and Morgan Freeman’s Western thriller Rode to Ruin has been acquired by Angel ahead of its 2027 release

Michael Keaton and Morgan Freeman are teaming up for the Western thriller Rode to Ruin, which has been acquired by Angel for worldwide rights ahead of the upcoming TIFF Market.

Angel will handle the film’s domestic release and is launching international pre-sales for the project as part of its new international sales arm. Rode to Ruin is currently expected to be released in 2027, although production has yet to begin.

Directed by Keaton and written by R. Dean McCreary, the film follows a retired US Marshal who spends 40 years searching for the person responsible for killing his wife. His investigation eventually leads him to an ageing outlaw suffering from memory loss, where he uncovers a buried secret that could put both men in danger.

The film will reunite Keaton and Freeman on screen nearly four decades after they appeared together in the 1988 drama Clean and Sober. Keaton has previously directed Knox Goes Away and The Merry Gentleman, while Freeman has appeared in several notable Westerns, including Unforgiven.

Rode to Ruin is produced by Lori McCreary, Keaton, Kelly Mendelsohn and Gary Lucchesi. Angel acquired the project from McCreary and Freeman’s Revelations Entertainment and Keaton’s George & Leona Productions.

The deal also marks Angel’s first move into international pre-sales. The company already has distribution partners across several overseas territories and says its films have been released theatrically in more than 95 countries.

Angel will officially launch international sales for Rode to Ruin at TIFF: The Market next week. The company’s slate also includes Runner, Hershey and Zero A.D.
