Jamal Shah denies Faryal Gohar’s abuse allegations, disputes account of pregnancy loss

Actor says their marriage had been misrepresented, offering his own account of the relationship and divorce

Actor Jamal Shah has denied abuse allegations made by his former wife, actor Faryal Gohar, saying details about their marriage had been misrepresented. He also disputed Gohar’s account of her pregnancy loss, saying it had followed a dog bite.

His response followed Gohar’s appearance on a morning show, where she spoke about what she described as a nine-year abusive marriage. “I endured 9 years of an abusive marriage. I was subjected to physical violence and a restrictive environment,” Gohar said. She also spoke about the loss of her unborn child, describing it as a turning point in her life.

Shah responded on X to posts discussing Gohar’s comments about their marriage, suggesting that her remarks had been misinterpreted by the channel that aired her interview.

“Only one pregnancy, in 1985, was lost when Muniza Hashmi’s dog at her house in Lahore bit Faryal, resulting in a miscarriage. Apart from that, there was no pregnancy because I was studying on a scholarship,” he wrote.

Shah also rejected claims that he had been violent towards Gohar, writing, “I never committed violence and nor did I ever say anything wrong about Faryal. The decision for divorce was also mine!”

The actor also took aim at the channel that aired Gohar’s interview, criticising what he described as “mud-slinging programmes on ordinary people like me!!! What a pity!!!!”

Shah continued responding to comments on X, reiterating his denial of the allegations and saying he had “never beaten or subjected [her] to any kind of abuse”. He also objected to what he said was inaccurate discussion of his former wife and their marriage.

He later shared what he described as the timeline of their relationship, saying they had married in 1984, Gohar had lost her pregnancy in 1985, he had studied at the Slade College of Arts in London from 1986 to 1988, and they had divorced in 1989.

Shah said there had been no domestic violence during their marriage and explained that they had not had another pregnancy because they had not planned to have children while he was studying in London.

He also turned the conversation towards his life after the marriage, revealing that he had remarried in 2005 and had three children. He described his current wife as “very caring, capable and mature” and said his family lived “modestly but in a peaceful and happy relationship”.

The public exchange has brought attention to the former couple’s conflicting accounts of their marriage. While Gohar spoke publicly about what she described as years of abuse and the loss of her pregnancy, Shah offered a different account of the events
