Sony has agreed to $8m settlement for eligible US PlayStation players over digital game prices

Sony has agreed to pay almost $8 million to PlayStation players who purchased certain digital games following a lawsuit over game pricing.

Sony has agreed to an approximately $8 million settlement involving PlayStation players who purchased certain digital games after the company stopped allowing third-party retailers to sell individual digital download codes in 2019.

The lawsuit alleged that Sony’s decision forced customers to purchase digital games directly through PlayStation, potentially resulting in higher prices. Sony denies any wrongdoing, and the settlement does not represent a court judgment against the company.

According to the PSNDigitalGamesSettlement website, eligible players in the US will receive their portion of the settlement as credit to their PlayStation Network accounts without needing to submit a claim.

Players whose accounts have been disabled may instead request payment by cheque, although the deadline for cheque requests was August 27. Extensions may be possible for those receiving legal assistance.

Eligibility is limited to US residents who purchased one of the games covered by the court documents between April 1, 2019 and December 31, 2023. Players can check their PlayStation purchase history to determine whether they bought an eligible title.

The games covered by the settlement include titles across PlayStation platforms and publishers. Among them are Trials Fusion, Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China, Destiny – The Collection, Call of Duty Classic, Demon’s Souls, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed Rivals, Battlefield Hardline, Star Wars Battlefront, Mass Effect Trilogy, NieR: Automata, Resident Evil 4, No Man’s Sky, Human: Fall Flat, Bloodborne Complete Edition Bundle, Until Dawn, The Last of Us Remastered, Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, God of War III Remastered, Shadow of the Colossus and Freedom Wars.
