UN chief praises Pakistan's multilateral diplomacy

ISLAMABAD:

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Tuesday appreciated Pakistan's constructive and principled role in multilateral diplomacy and commended its contributions to promoting regional peace and security.

The development came as Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar met Guterres on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Heads of State Summit in Bishkek.

Dar reaffirmed Pakistan's strong commitment to the UN and underscored the close and longstanding Pakistan-UN partnership.

He appreciated the leadership of Guterres in advancing the UN's role in addressing global challenges and promoting effective multilateralism.

During the meeting, the two sides exchanged views on regional developments, preparations for the upcoming United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), and ongoing work at the UN Security Council.

The secretary-general appreciated Pakistan's constructive and principled role in multilateral diplomacy and commended its contributions to promoting regional peace and security.

The DPM/FM extended an invitation to the Secretary-General to visit Pakistan, which he accepted.

The Foreign Office of Pakistan will coordinate with the UN Secretariat to finalize the dates for the visit, a statement issued here by the FO said.

In a separate meeting with SCO Secretary-General Nurlan Yermekbayev, Dar shared Pakistan's priorities and proposed approach for its Chairmanship.

Yermekbayev congratulated Pakistan on assuming the Chairmanship of the SCO for 2026-27, according to a statement issued here by the FO spokesperson.

Dar also met with China Foreign Minister Wang Yi, on the sidelines of the SCO Council of Heads of State.

The two foreign ministers discussed matters of mutual interest, including the 2026 UNGA in New York and the ongoing process for electing the next Secretary-General of the United Nations.
