YouTube creator and filmmaker Markiplier has acquired an 8.5% stake in GoPro, becoming the camera company’s largest single shareholder.

YouTube star and filmmaker Mark Fischbach, known professionally as Markiplier, has acquired an 8.5 per cent stake in GoPro, making him the company’s largest single shareholder.

According to the supplied report, Fischbach’s investment is worth around $9.3 million based on GoPro’s current valuation of approximately $110 million.

The camera manufacturer has faced financial difficulties, including job cuts, discussions about a potential sale and financial support from founder and CEO Nick Woodman.

Fischbach said his investment reflects his belief that GoPro is undervalued and that he wants the company to succeed.

“I saw the stock and where it was, I was like that seems undervalued.” Fischbach said in an interview. “It’s just something I’ve been cooking in the background; I want the company to succeed.”

The filmmaker has used GoPro cameras while producing behind-the-scenes footage for his horror film Iron Lung, which he released earlier this year.

The film reportedly earned more than $50 million at the box office against a $3 million budget, with Fischbach handling its distribution himself.

Fischbach has also expressed interest in GoPro’s Mission 1 Pro ILS camera, which he believes could open a new market for the company.

He initially attempted to see the camera at NAB in April before eventually being invited to GoPro’s California offices.

“It blows my mind what it can do in such a small package,” Fischbach said of the GoPro Mission 1 Pro ILS. “They have a big future with this camera coming out opening up a new segment for them.”
