Nicole Kidman's niece interviews her before Practical Magic 2, reveals family's 'magic' traditions

Kidman is returning for Practical Magic 2, which continues the story more than 25 years after the original 1998 film

Nicole Kidman got a very personal interviewer for her latest Practical Magic 2 conversation: her own niece, Lucia Hawley.

Hawley, 28, sat down with her aunt and Kidman's Practical Magic 2 co-star Sandra Bullock for an interview with UK outlet SheerLuxe on August 27, ahead of the long-awaited sequel's theatrical release. The conversation quickly turned from Hollywood magic to the real-life mystical traditions of the Kidman family.

"I don't know if you know this about the Kidman women," Hawley began, before explaining that the family "sway[s] to the more magical side" and that some might even describe them as witches.

She also revealed that their grandmother was born on Friday the 13th, prompting Bullock to jokingly tell Kidman, "Oh, it all makes sense now, okay," as the actress laughed.

Hawley then asked the two actresses about their favourite spells.

Kidman had an unexpected answer.

"Love spells," she joked, before explaining that when she becomes upset with someone, she writes their name down and puts it in the freezer.

"What does that do?" Bullock asked.

"Freezes them out," Kidman replied.

Hawley added that her grandmother, Janelle Ann Kidman, also kept a list of names in the ice-cube section of her freezer. Janelle died in 2024.

The playful exchange offered an especially fitting connection to Practical Magic, in which Kidman plays Gillian Owens, one half of the witchy Owens sisters alongside Bullock's Sally.

Kidman and Bullock are returning to their iconic roles for Practical Magic 2, which continues the story of the Owens family more than 25 years after the original 1998 film. The sequel also features returning stars Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest, with Joey King, Maisie Williams, Lee Pace, Xolo Maridueña and Solly McLeod among the new additions to the cast.

The reunion has also allowed Kidman and Bullock to revisit the close bond they formed while making the original film. Kidman previously shared a behind-the-scenes video of the pair embracing on their first day back on the set of the sequel, captioning it, "The witches are back" and celebrating the return of the Owens sisters.

With Hawley's interview bringing Kidman's family history into the conversation, the promotion for Practical Magic 2 has taken on an appropriately personal twist. The fictional Owens family's supernatural traditions may belong to the world of the films, but Kidman's niece made it clear that the actress has a few playful magical traditions of her own.

Practical Magic 2 is scheduled to arrive in cinemas in September 2026.
