'Sicario 3' is finally happening, Josh Brolin reveals production is coming soon

Josh Brolin has given fans of the Sicario franchise a major update, confirming that Sicario 3 is moving forward after years of uncertainty surrounding the long awaited sequel. The actor, who has played CIA operative Matt Graver across the first two films, said the third instalment is "happening" and indicated that production could begin soon.

Brolin shared the update during a recent conversation with ScreenRant, where he addressed the status of the next chapter in the action thriller franchise. His comments offer the clearest indication yet that the project remains active and could finally enter production after an extended period of development.

The potential return of Sicario 3 comes nearly a decade after the release of Sicario: Day of the Soldado in 2018. That film followed Denis Villeneuve's original Sicario, released in 2015, which introduced audiences to the brutal world of cartel warfare through the perspective of FBI agent Kate Macer, played by Emily Blunt.

In the first film, Brolin's Matt Graver recruits Kate into a government task force targeting major figures within Mexican drug cartels. The operation also brings her into contact with Alejandro, the mysterious and ruthless operative portrayed by Benicio Del Toro. Villeneuve directed the original film, while Taylor Sheridan wrote the screenplay.

The sequel changed several elements of the original setup. Stefano Sollima directed Sicario: Day of the Soldado, while Brolin and Del Toro returned as Graver and Alejandro. Blunt did not appear in the sequel, with Isabela Merced joining the cast. The follow up continued the story surrounding the escalating conflict between American operatives, cartels and the violent forces operating along the US Mexico border.

The two films have established a sizeable international audience, with the franchise having generated more than $160m globally, according to Deadline. The commercial performance has helped keep interest in another chapter alive despite the long gap between instalments.

For Brolin, returning as Matt Graver would mark another appearance in a character he has played across the franchise since 2015. The actor has also remained active across major film and television projects during the years since Day of the Soldado.

Sheridan's career has also expanded considerably since the release of the second Sicario film. His television work has included Yellowstone and its related projects, alongside series such as Landman, The Madison, Lioness, Tulsa King and Mayor of Kingstown. His continued involvement with the Sicario universe has kept the possibility of another film in public discussion.

There is currently no confirmed release date for Sicario 3, and Brolin's comments do not establish a specific production start date. Details regarding the director, wider returning cast and storyline for the third film have also yet to be officially confirmed.

Still, Brolin's statement represents a significant development for the franchise. After years without a concrete production announcement, the actor's confirmation that Sicario 3 is "happening" suggests the project has progressed considerably and could soon move into its next phase.

The potential sequel also leaves room for the return of characters and performers from the earlier films. Brolin and Del Toro remain closely associated with the franchise, while the response to the second film demonstrated continued interest in its central characters and its tense portrayal of the cartel conflict.
