Robin Williams’ children have revived the late actor and comedian’s official Instagram account, turning the long dormant page into a space dedicated to preserving his legacy and pushing back against unauthorised artificial intelligence recreations of his voice and likeness.

Zak Williams, Zelda Williams and Cody Williams announced the decision in a joint statement posted to Robin Williams’ Instagram account on August 17, 2026. The move came during what would have been the actor’s 75th year and marked a significant change for a profile that had remained inactive since his death in 2014.

The siblings said they want the account to give fans access to genuine stories, photographs, videos and memories connected to their father. Their statement described the page as a place where his legacy could be represented with authenticity and care as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly capable of imitating real people.

The family’s decision is also closely tied to Zelda Williams’ longstanding criticism of AI generated material featuring her father. Zelda has previously spoken publicly about receiving AI videos that recreate Robin Williams’ appearance or voice. She has urged people to stop sending such material to her, describing the practice as deeply uncomfortable and inconsistent with how she believes her father should be remembered.

In an Instagram Story explaining the latest decision, Zelda acknowledged that seeing her father’s account active again could feel strange or even upsetting for some fans. She said maintaining an authentic online presence for him was one of the ways the family had found to challenge the growing use of AI recreations of his identity.

Robin Williams died by suicide on August 11, 2014, at the age of 63. His death came after he had been diagnosed with Lewy body dementia, a neurological condition that can affect movement, cognition and behaviour. His career remains closely associated with films including Good Will Hunting, Dead Poets Society, Mrs Doubtfire, Jumanji and Aladdin.

The revival of his Instagram account comes against a wider backdrop of concern surrounding digital recreations of deceased performers. AI tools can now generate convincing images, voices and videos that can make public figures appear to say or do things they never actually said or did. For families, estates and fans, that has created growing questions about authenticity, consent and how the identities of deceased performers should be represented online.

The Williams siblings are taking a different approach by making their father’s official account a recognised source for genuine material. Their statement said they are grateful that new generations continue to discover Robin Williams’ work while longtime fans remember the impact he had on their lives.

The family’s message also gives the account a clear purpose. Rather than allowing AI generated versions of Robin Williams to become the dominant way younger audiences encounter him online, Zak, Zelda and Cody are seeking to keep real photographs, performances, memories and archival material at the centre of his digital legacy.
