Ex-SHO quizzed in cop killings probe
Investigators examine alleged release of Rehan Butt after weapon recovery

Police investigation into the targeted killings of police personnel in Lahore has been expanded, with investigators questioning a former Station House Officer (SHO) of Ravi Road police station over the alleged release of a suspect without legal action. The sources said the former SHO was questioned after investigators learned that alleged target killers Rehan Butt and Tariq had been detained by a police protection squad in the Ravi Road area several months ago.
Despite the alleged recovery of weapons, Ravi Road police reportedly released Rehan without taking legal action, while a case of illegal weapons possession was registered against Tariq. The former SHO was allowed to leave after questioning but could be summoned again as the investigation progresses.
Meanwhile, a joint police team has travelled to Azad Jammu and Kashmir to trace and arrest Tariq, who remains at large. Investigators also examined the use of surveillance drones during the operation to trace the suspects in Sheikhupura.
Police sources said a drone identified the presence of suspects inside a house in Ravi Rayan. The suspects allegedly opened fire at the drone after noticing it, following which police surrounded the house.
Officials described the use of surveillance drones during the high-value operation as a successful experience for Lahore Police.
Meanwhile, Tariq's criminal record has also emerged.
According to police records, he was the complainant in one case and an accused in another. In 2023, he registered a case at Banni police station in Rawalpindi, while a case against him for alleged illegal possession of weapons was registered at Ravi Road police station in 2026.
Earlier, two men suspected of involvement in the killings of three police personnel in Lahore were killed in an alleged encounter with the Crime Control Department (CCD) in Muridke.
As per a case registered at Sadar Muridke police station, police received information that three armed suspects, identified as Fayyaz Butt, his son Rehan Butt and their accomplice.
