Only Murders in the Building is turning its upcoming sixth season into an unexpected reunion of Doctor Who stars, with Peter Capaldi joining the Hulu murder mystery comedy in a recurring guest role.

Capaldi, who played the Twelfth Doctor from 2013 to 2017, has been cast in the London set season. His arrival adds another former Doctor to an already remarkable group of actors connected to the BBC sci fi franchise.

The actor joins Jodie Whittaker, who portrayed the Thirteenth Doctor, and David Tennant, who played the Tenth Doctor and later returned as the Fourteenth Doctor. Jim Broadbent is also part of the season and previously appeared as an alternate version of the Eleventh Doctor in the 1999 Comic Relief special Doctor Who: The Curse of Fatal Death.

Capaldi's casting was announced as production continues in the UK, where Only Murders in the Building is filming its sixth season. The new installment marks a major change in setting for the series, as Charles, Oliver and Mabel leave New York City for the first time.

Steve Martin plays Charles Haden Savage, Martin Short portrays Oliver Putnam and Selena Gomez stars as Mabel Mora. The trio will travel to London as they become involved in a new murder mystery.

The sixth season already boasts an extensive guest cast. Alongside Capaldi, Whittaker, Tennant and Broadbent, the returning and newly added names include Nicola Coughlan, Richard Ayoade, Adrian Lukis, Kathryn Hunter, Jennifer Saunders, Sean Teale, Simone Ashley, Amar Chadha Patel, Rhea Norwood, Matthew Beard, Sharon Horgan, Martin Freeman, Geri Halliwell Horner, Jamie Demetriou, Anjana Vasan, Jane Horrocks, Derek Jacobi and Lesley Nicol.

The London setting also gives the series an opportunity to introduce a fresh mystery while retaining the central dynamic between Charles, Oliver and Mabel. The first five seasons established the trio as amateur investigators who repeatedly become entangled in murders connected to their New York surroundings.

Capaldi brings a substantial television and film career to the series. Beyond Doctor Who, he is widely recognised for playing political spin doctor Malcolm Tucker in The Thick of It, a role that earned him two British Comedy Awards. He has also appeared in projects including Criminal Record and The Devil's Hour.

The actor has continued working in music alongside his screen career. In 2026, he released Sweet Illusions, his second album of original songs, and is scheduled to tour later this year.

For Only Murders in the Building, the casting creates an especially striking connection between two British television institutions. Tennant, Whittaker, Capaldi and Broadbent have all been associated with different versions of the Doctor Who universe, while the upcoming season places them within the same murder mystery comedy.

The series was created by Steve Martin and John Hoffman and is produced by 20th Television. Martin, Short and Gomez are among the executive producers, alongside Hoffman, Dan Fogelman, Jess Rosenthal, Ben Smith, Jennifer Crittenden and Gabrielle Allan.

A release date for Season 6 has not been announced. Production is currently continuing in the UK.
