Matt Bellamy files for divorce from Elle Evans after seven years of marriage

Muse frontman Matt Bellamy has filed for divorce from model and actress Elle Evans after seven years of marriage, bringing their separation into a formal legal process. Bellamy filed the petition in a Los Angeles court on August 12, 2026, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for ending the marriage. According to court documents obtained by PEOPLE, the musician is also asking for sole legal and physical custody of the couple’s two children, daughter Lovella and son George.

The filing follows months of uncertainty surrounding the couple’s relationship. Bellamy publicly confirmed in June that he and Evans had separated in summer 2025, although he kept the circumstances surrounding the split private. Speaking to The i Paper, the Muse singer described the situation as involving "really unexpected circumstances" and said it had forced him to focus heavily on his children and their stability at home. 

Bellamy’s latest court filing indicates that custody will be a significant part of the divorce proceedings. It was reported that he requested sole custody of Lovella, 6, and George, 2. Evans has indicated that she intends to contest the custody request. The filing also asks the court to address spousal support according to the couple’s premarital agreement. Evans has 30 days to respond to the divorce petition, according to the court documents.

Bellamy and Evans began dating after meeting while Evans appeared in Muse’s 2015 music video for "Mercy". They became engaged in December 2017 and married in August 2019 in Malibu, California. Their first child, Lovella, was born in June 2020, while their son George was born in 2024.

The couple’s separation first attracted wider attention in early 2026, before Bellamy addressed it directly several months later. At the time, he avoided providing specific details about what had happened between them, saying the circumstances were difficult to explain publicly. He also explained that caring for the children and establishing stability became his priority during the upheaval.

The personal turmoil also affected Bellamy creatively. During his June interview, he said the experience influenced Muse’s music and described writing the band’s album The Wow! Signal during the period as cathartic. He explained that the songs emerged while he was dealing with the upheaval in his personal life, turning the recording process into an important outlet.

Bellamy and Evans have also continued to share moments involving their children despite their separation. It was previously reported that they reunited with family in May to celebrate George’s second birthday, suggesting that their parenting relationship has continued alongside the breakdown of their marriage.
