'House of the Dragon' season 3 finale's Helaena tapestry explained

Targaryen's tragic story takes an even darker turn in the House of the Dragon season 3 finale, when the princess's mysterious tapestry is finally revealed to contain disturbing images that may have predicted both her own death and Rhaenyra's fate.

Throughout season 3, Helaena, played by Phia Saban, has been imprisoned in King's Landing by Rhaenyra, with increasingly little access to the outside world and few family members left around her. During her captivity, however, Helaena has been quietly weaving an elaborate tapestry.

The princess is already known to have the ability to see glimpses of the future, making the tapestry particularly significant. Its meaning becomes clear only after Helaena's story reaches its devastating conclusion in the finale.

After learning from Lady Mysaria, played by Sonoya Mizuno, that her brother-husband Aegon, played by Tom Glynn-Carney, is still alive, Helaena is reminded that her unborn child is also being held hostage. The pregnancy, which was revealed earlier in the season, represents another potential threat to Rhaenyra's claim to the Iron Throne.

Helaena later has a tense confrontation with Rhaenyra, during which she refuses to eat and criticises the "ugliness" of Rhaenyra's rule. The guards eventually restrain her and force-feed her.

By the end of the episode, Helaena has completed her tapestry. She walks towards the open window of her room, and the final moments reveal Rhaenyra discovering the tapestry trailing outside. Helaena is then shown dead at the bottom of the tower, impaled on spikes.

Rhaenyra picks up the tapestry and examines the images, revealing two particularly striking scenes.

The first depicts a blonde woman in a royal gown falling from a tower resembling the Red Keep. The image appears to be a depiction of Helaena's own death, suggesting that her prophetic abilities allowed her to see the tragedy that was waiting for her.

The second image is considerably more mysterious. It shows Rhaenyra crowned and sitting on the Iron Throne while holding a sword. Flames, dragons and reaching hands surround her, while red threads run down her body and from her fingers before pooling around the throne like blood.

The imagery could represent Helaena's view of the bloodshed associated with Rhaenyra's rise to power. Helaena had already made her feelings towards Rhaenyra clear during their final confrontation, so the violent imagery may reflect her belief that Rhaenyra's rule has brought destruction to the realm.

But the tapestry could also be offering a more literal prophecy. The image of Rhaenyra surrounded by fire and blood may hint at her eventual death, potentially showing the queen meeting her fate while still holding the sword and sitting on the throne she has spent her life fighting to claim.

With Helaena's tapestry now revealed, House of the Dragon has left fans with another potentially crucial prophecy to decipher ahead of the fourth and final season. Whether the image is a symbolic condemnation of Rhaenyra's reign or a glimpse of what awaits the queen remains to be seen.
